“For dedicated art lovers, a very nice little museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

I came here to see several works by Brueghel, and also enjoyed a nice collection of 16th c. and 17th c. portraits. The house containing the collection is quite picturesque, and the museum extremely tranquil.

Mayer Van der bergh's collections run from middle-age to the 18th century. It offers masterpieces from brueghel in an authentic setting. Really inspiring!

“A real treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2014

The origin of this museum is a private collection, and it contains a huge variety of art pieces and historical materials. It gives a great panoramic view of the history of the region, during its richest development period. Very cheap entrance.

“Interesting little museum”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

This museum contains one man's collection. Mayer van den Bergh collected items that took his interest for 20 years before his premature death in the early 20th century. His mother continued with his life dream and turned his collection into a museum.

It's not a big museum but there are some star items to look at. I knew nothing of what was there and was blown away at finding a room full of Bruegels and a few of their contemporaries. Apparently in the late 19th century the Bruegel family's paintings were almost unknown and it was van den Bergh who brought them to people's attention. There was also a fascinating room containing medieval French and Dutch sculptures that he snapped up under the noses of the big Paris museums. Apart from these two rooms, everyone will probably find something to pique their interest. His collection is eclectic and fascinating.

There is an entrance charge with a free very useful little guide book that helps where labelling doesn't. It's free with the Citycard.

“actually damn fine place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

Only wnet because we got a joint ticket with the Rubens Museum but after visiting both, we (4 of us) agreed that this was exceptional value. Great eclectic mix and something for everyone.
