“Well maintained and interesting museum showcasing history of music in Flanders.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

Compact exhibition of all things musical pertaining to Flanders, displayed over two floors.
Disappointingly, the 'audio guide' didn't have that much audio content - at least the English language version didn't! However, the English language visual explanations were very adequate.
You won't need much more than an hour here, but still a worthwhile diversion.
Visit if you're exploring the 'old town'.

“Excellent exhibits but the technology should be improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2011

We visited the "Sound of the City" exhibition at the Vleeshuis (so-called because the brickwork is reminiscent of streaky bacon). On the main (ground) floor, there is a historical collection of instruments, all related to Flanders in some way. In the basement, bell and instrument manufacture is covered. On a more practical note, the toilets downstairs are well maintained. There are coat hooks but no lockers and it didn't look like the access was step-free.

The interesting thing about this museum is the way information is given out, as all you really see next to the items is a title and number. You are handed a portable touch-screen device at the beginning of your visit. It is not an audio guide in the traditional sense. You enter the exhibit number and get an encyclopaedia page about the instrument. All exhibits have text and most a musical sample of the instrument. Some have images and even videos. If there is something you want to research later, you can enter your email address and, in principle, you will receive an article in your inbox. In principle. In reality, the text for the majority of items still hasn't been translated from Dutch and the machines are prone to crashing if you watch the videos. I tried the email service, but the number of address characters is restricted, so I couldn't receive the links. All in all, it's a nice idea but it needs a bit of tweaking.
