“Antwerp's unique attraction”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

This beautiful old printing house, set around a lovely courtyard garden, contains the oldest printing presses in the world, dating from around 1600, and has much to offer to lovers of old houses, enthusiasts for old books, and anybody with an interest in furnishings: the wooden benches for proofreaders and the leather panels on the walls are particularly appealing. Absolutely not to be missed!

“Beautifully Preserved, get the headset”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

The artifacts are beautifully preserved and the history well laid out. I strongly recommend that you get the headsets since there is limited documentation with with the exhibits. Don't worry, they are quite inexpensive and really do a great job explaining the history of the times, the families, and how different people played a role in Antwerpen printing.

By the way, there is a small fee 8 Euro for adults, 1 for kids.

“Real Antwerp history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

The Plantin-Moretus family was *the* reference for printing books for almost four centuries.

Why should you visit this museum?
Of course if you have a profound interest in book printing. But also if you don't, it is still very interesting to see how printing, now easy task performed by computers and machines, was labor intensive and not so trivial process in the 16th century.
Also if you are curious to see how a wealthy family lived in those days you should take a look here. The museum is in the building where the printing company/book store was housed and all furniture, paintings (many of which were made by a personal friend of the family - Pieter-Paul Rubens) and other interior elements are authentic and never left the house since the 16th century. Also the collection of old books (some with intricate miniatures) and maps is well worth your time.

If you want more information on every room, there is an informative audioguide available (2€).

“Very interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

The Plantin is full of some amazing history! The printing presses, the evolution of bound books, and the maps just to name a few. The house is also full of amazing art, architecture, and history. I loved the hand done bibles & amazingly done in several languages! The libraries are stunningly beautiful I would have loved to have a seat at one of the tables & dove into some books!

“A large collection of printing equipment and early books”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

Some very unique exhibits of the early Bible, books and maps. A little workshop for kids to watch the type setting and printing. Probably there is a bit too much info on all the printing processes, if you are not interested in printing. But it is a great place to see old texts and printing equipment and to reflect on how much work it used to take to produce a book. Free last Wednesday of every month.
