We live in London and are spoilt by one of the best zoos in the world. However, Antwerp zoo is a good place to visit. Situated just behind the main station, it is small but good. Like many European zoos the animal houses are spectacular. The giraffe house is done out in ancient Egyptian style, there is also an Indian style building etc.
It doesn't have that many animals (who seemed pretty content with things, although I thought the tortoises area could have been a bit cleaner for them - but, then again, we did visit on a Sunday morning just after the zoo had opened, so maybe the keepers hadn't had a chance to clean it), but certainly provides a riveting couple of hours.
It is pretty child friendly, of course, but doesn't go over the top with things for the kids as so many other zoos do nowadays (I didn't see any evidence of face painting or rip-off rides for example).
All in all a pleasant experience.
