Het Nieuwe Palinghuis is definitely the best fish restaurant in Antwerp. It all starts with the chef coming at your table to explain what he has besides the menu. It doesn't matter what you order, menu or day specials, everything is fresh and tasty. For instance, they smoke their salmon themselves, wonderful! I also adore the shrimp croquettes (garnalenkroketten). Or the very thinly sliced eel (paling), delicious. Or if there's someone who wants to share, do try the Bouillabaisse. It is served in 4 or 5 steps and it is absolutely delicious, with all kinds of fish and shell food.
All the fish is excellently prepared, very natural and with light sauces. Just choose what you like, it is all good. I absolutely adore the monkfish (zeeduivel) with peppersauce and home made fries, super!!
There is also some meat on the menu, but I did never get around to taste it (it will be good I'm sure).
The desserts are worth the try.
The winelist is good, there's something for everyone there.
The service is excellent, the two girls keep an eye on everyone and will tend to your needs very rapidly and efficiently (and with great humour if needed!).
The restaurant has a nice cosy decor and is fit for all kinds of occassions. You can decide to dress up a little or go more informal.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner and is closed Mondays and Tuesday.
