Simon de Vogel exemplifies all that is good in Dutch delis. Amazing bread and cold cuts that are different from anything one could ever eat in the United States. The Frederik Hendriklaan is a nice shopping street and this is a great place to stop for lunch. There are many good choices, but two of my favorites are the fricandeau (pork or veal loin), a very lean cut, and the osseworst. The latter is a beef salami, but there is nothing like this in the US as far as I know. If you have the fricandeau, do eat it Dutch-style with salt and pepper. Of course you can never go wrong with Dutch cheese, but you can find that in many places, and there is a large assortment of cheeses from all over Europe. I travel to the Netherlands every few years and can't wait to have a few meals here.
