This has to be one of the oddest hotels in Europe. You could forgive them if it was a refurb, but it was a brand new build and why on earth it was designed like this is anyone's guess. The rooms are well described previously. The glass bathroom is just downright silly, and offers nil privacy with a partner. There is no waste bin, just the tiny hygienic bin in the bathroom. There is a good sized safe though, big enough for a 15" laptop. Lighting is wholly inadequate if you want to work at the desk. The wooden shutter means the room is either light or dark, and if you want privacy in the day you have to close it, owing to overlooking buildings - although you could entertain the Shell EP HQ staff I suppose. Ventilation is generally poor, I'm not sure there is any fresh air at all and I got terrible headaches while I was there.
There are three places to eat, the breakfast room, which is like a monks refectory, you all sit at huge long tables. The quality of breakfast, in common with much of Holland, is dismal, with greasy bacon, soggy eggs, cheap fruit salad and an awful lot of bread. The Grand Canteen has more refectory tables, a bit shorter but still lacking any privacy, and is the main place to eat. Can get very busy and is expensive, menu rather pretentious, service often slow. Imko Binnerts is a Michelin starred restaurant specialising in fish. Good but VERY expensive, and wacky decor. Room service has a limited menu, expensive, and comes with an additional 7.5 euro charge. El rip-off. To even get to your room you have to traverse the Eiger staircase with transverse rail (this would fail any normal HSE inspection) and pass through the bar and Grand Canteen. Tedious, and same for the gym access, really nice having sweaty types walk past as you are trying to eat. The hotel is situated in Rijswijk, an industrial working-class suburb of The Hague. Public transport is good but you don't want to spend too much time on the streets at night. There is a Chinese/Thai/Japanese over the road, OK, and a Dominos pizza. All in all, wacky, weird, and a triumph of style over substance. Staff are generally friendly though, and it is clean enough.
