“My favorite restaurant in Rotterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

It’s been thirty years since the first time I had dinner at “The Pijp,” and the multitude of times I've had dinner, or had a drink there since then has always been memorable, and I always wear my tie that I was given years ago. The food is excellent (especially the lamb), and the locals that frequent The Pijp are a mix of ages from young college kids to the older retirees, and have been going there for years. I enjoy listening to the old timers, and the waiters recounting stories from the WWII days, and the roll the Pijp played with downed allied flight crews while the German occupying forces dined at the restaurant. The food is great, the staff is very professional, but the patrons are the main reason I keep going back year after year after year. If you’re looking for a nice quiet place for a romantic Dutch meal this is not the place for you, but if you’re looking to have some fun, make new friends while enjoying expertly prepared Dutch food Bierhandel De Pijp is a place you won’t want to miss.

“Cool & Authentic experience in Rotterdam!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

I had the opportunity to go to Bierhandel De Pijp with some colleagues and it was a pleasant surprise!
Great feeling in what is labelled as the "oldest restaurant in Rotterdam". Really cool to have a beer and eat some nuts before dinner (those nuts, that you throw in the floor!)
Food was mainstream but definitely a place for people who like to live authentic local experiences!

“An unexpected delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2014

Not just a restaurant, De Pijp transports you to richly textured and authentic world, where tradition still has a warm and friendly meaning and the food is absolutely delicious. But spoiler alert: only come here if you're the kind of person who enjoys throwing peanut shells on the floor and the quirkiness of a decor that includes neckties donated by patrons and candid snaps of the famous, infamous and obscure (e.g. Mick Jagger). A place for a completely memorable and unique experience, but not for luxurious dining or a quiet lover's tryst. You can watch the chef's in the open kitchen cook your food to order, and it will arrive at your table fresh and piping hot. The lamb was honestly better than anything I've ever had anywhere anytime, and even the scalloped potatoes were ambrosial. Service is fabulous -- fast, friendly and professional, without either obsequiousness or the false camaraderie of "Hi, my name's John and I'll be your waitperson." Only downside was a rather weak list of wines available by the glass. But hey, who cares when all else is so intoxicating?

“Good honest food in a cosy place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2014

Great little restaurant, unpretentious, honest and authentic. 5 of us - beer and nuts. Steak & fried potatoes delicious. Very relaxed. very welcoming. great service - team looks like they really enjoy working there. Can imagine it can get rowdy so not a place for a romantic meal but with a group of friends a really honest place to go.

4. Enjoy fresh locally sourced produce prepared before your eyes - True
5. Participate in a dining experience that promotes an informal atmosphere and conversation with others - True
