“Terrible Service, never book here-gave away our paid in full room.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2011

We booked and fully paid a room here a month n advance, our train was delayed getting in to Rotterdam so only got to the hotel at about 9.30pm. Didn't think this would be a problem as we had it PAID IN FULL. But no, we hauld all our luggage up their TINY NARROW EXTREMELY STEEP staircase to be told by the girl eating chips beind the counter that they gave our room away cos we didnt get there in time!? Her english wasn't great but her attitude wasn't helping the situation. It was Jazz Festival weekend so obviously impossible to find a new hotel. She reluctantly let us use her slow internet and phne to try to book a new hotel, but couldn't even help us dial the numbers ( we didnt know how many numbers were needed for a local number, and coulnt wrk out the dutch phone message when we did it wrong) THen when we left about an hour hlater she gave us bogus information for a train back to down town ( hotel is in a bit of a sketchy neighbourhood aswell) so we ended up travelling on the wrong tram 4 times, absolute nightmare, finally found a differnt hotel at 1.30 in the morning. The lady at Benelux had assured us we would get our money back, but it took 5 months and many emails and phone calls and much further frustration. Never again. Stay away.

Room Tip: book elsewhere

If your planning to stay at this place because its cheap dont!!
On arrival we were greeted by the stench of wet dog and stairs that would have given season mountain climbers problems.....the stairs were practically vertical and very narrow.
When you finally reach the reception you are greeted by very surly and unfriendly staff whom proceeded to try and charge us an extra 5% on top of what we had paid.
The room was very small but suffice for our needs although the air conditioning did not work (as someone had removed the buttons!!!)
There as a total lack of hygiene and the cuboards and draws had not been cleaned for a very long time (in one draw i found a half eaten toffee covered in dust!!!)
The shower was ok but after a few minutes of showering the whole bathroom would fill with water.
The toilet was a joke it is literally against the bathroom door with the sink on your right shoulder.
The area is a little grimy but ok, next to the hotel is a coffee shop and shop with some unsavoury characters hanging about late at night.
The transport into Rotterdam was good with a tram litterally outside the hotel door and 5 stops into the centre of Rotterdam.
After 1 night we moved out despite paying for 3 nights....it was more than a grown man like myself could bear!!
Overall if i have to give marks out of 10 it would just about get a 1 purely because it is cheap, i would recommend you save your money and book elsewhere

better choose some other place to stay, especially if for leisure travelling! bad district, especially at night, noisy and you have to climb stairs with your luggage! :)

This is by far the worst place we ever stayed! I am surprised that there is no authority in a country like the Netherlands that check hotels! This hotel should not be aloud to have a licence. My dogs stay in a better place like this! We left this place in the middle of the night because we thought this was not good for our health. Dirt all over the floor. Junkies everywhere! Probably this is the place where they stay! Although we were drunk, we couldn't stay! my advice... don't go here!!!!!!! Hotel Benelux Rotterdam the most horrible place were you can go!

This the worst place i've ever stayed. Where do i start, the stairs are like a ladder and the receptionist don't speak english! The area the hotel is in is ghetto and i heard bottles being smashed outside and allsorts. The bathroom was so small i couldn't even have a dump with the door closed. I could go on forever but the bottom lone is after the first night i paid 150 euro a night to stay somewhere else because it was that bad. Don't bother wasting your time or money!

The experience rate is "Average" but not because of the hotel, but because of the experience we got in the Netherlands. When we got to the Benelux (it was hard to find and the neighborhood was a bit scary), we had to carry our luggage to the 2nd floor on the stairs, 'cos no other opportunity was given; the staff did not know good English, but tried to be helpful. The room was small, there was a big bed in it and that's it. The tv was broken, at least we could not use it. A plus is that there was wireless connection. If you are not an easy sleeper, the neighbors will probably give a hard time in the evening, the walls being very thin. If you took a shower, the whole bathroom got wet and floody; there was no place for our luggage...very very small room, not enough for two people, it was not cleaned properly (only the bathroom was clean)...so it is rather a hostel than a hotel. It happened that we could not enter our room because the card was locked after three days, but it was solved easily.
We would probably not go back to the Benelux, even if the average experience of Netherlands was good.

  • Liked — the price was good
  • Disliked — the room size and the others mentioned above:)

I stayed here with a companion for two nights, on the advice of a friendly agent at the tourist bureau. Let's just say I won't be returning. It's not that I had any high-falutin' expectations of a hotel at 40 euros a night, but it lacked all the charm that made us fall in love with similarly priced and sized hotels we stayed at in Amsterdam, Brussels, and Antwerp. First off, the location is not great - it's a across the Angel Bridge from the rest of the city in a rather depressing neighborhood. It is convenient to a tram stop, but make sure you catch the last tram if you're out on the "mainland" - we had to do some serious walking when the final tram forced us out two stops early. When you're buzzed into the building (the security is pretty tight), you're greeted with a hike up a number of flights of dizzyingly steep and nauseatingly ugly blue stairs. The room was decently furnished, but the TV was broken, the comforter was about 3/4 the size of the bed, and we were given one towel, about the size of a dish rag. We requested additional towels and bedding, and were given another of the mini-comforters. The shower was a real joy - in fact, the entire bathroom converts into a hot tub as soon as you turn it on. As a result, I had to turn the water on, get wet, turn the water off, kick the water that was flooding the bathroom towards the drain, soap up, turn the water on for another 5 seconds, rinse, kick water toward the drain, and etc. Staying here was a negative experience, especially considering the quaint, sweet, friendly hotels we stayed in elsewhere, for as much if not less than the Hotel Benelux. Do yourself a favor and look somewhere else if you're staying in Rotterdam - which, incidentally, I wouldn't recommend as a tourist destination. Really a disappointment through and through.
