“Good one night stay on business trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2011

Had a good stay here however only arrived late and left early in the morning. Nice building, friendly staff. Very spacious room. No complaints and fair value for money (although can't compare to other hotel in Rotterdam).

I stayed here for only one night for a meeting by the end of August. It is a nice boutique hotel in an old shipping office close to the waterfront. The building has been beautifully renovated and a lot of old style remained. My room was large, nicely decorated, clean, good bed and bathroom. I think all rooms are different.
I found the facilities in the hotel rather limited. The reception area downstairs is quite basic, in fact limited to the bare minimum. To me the facilities are comparing to a three star hotel. But I really have nothing to complain about my room or my stay.
The hotel can be easily reached with the tram (number 7) from the central railway station.
Dinner tip: walk to the waterfront and have dinner in the restaurant of the Wereldmuseum. Amazing quality!

Good location for access to Ahoy stadium, large room, comfortable bed, well-functioning air con, and large bathroom made the stay comfortable enough, but at 150€ a night (without breakfast) it was too pricey. There were no comfy chairs in the room, even though there was plenty of room for them, no mini-bar or fridge, no tea/coffee making serice, no room service, no bar or food service in hotel, no public space for meeting with friends or reading, nothing to justify the 4-star classification or room price. Could be a good high-end hotel if they develop the building and improve room facilities but it's not there yet.

Also, how many days are hotels allowed to go before changing the sheets? I'm all for saving the environment and not encouraging excessive water use, but when I'm paying premium rates I don't expect budget service.

Room Tip: Rooms not facing the street may be quieter.

There were some lovely original period architectural touches that set this place apart from others. However, for a supposed four-star hotel, it didn't feel like much more than a two-star in terms of quality. The room was very clean and there were good quality towels, but some lightbulbs were not working in the room and little things that make a hotel a hotel in the first place were missing (e.g., there was no shampoo for hair available -- only body wash). It was quite loud by 8 am, with people running in the room above us; voices in the corridor could be heard rather easily and the opening/closing of doors was quite noisy, too.

Stayed in this hotel because I went to see Muse in Ahoy and din't want a mad dash for the last train.

Had to look round to find the hotel but was pleasantly surprised with my room, thought it was rather spacous and very nicely decorated with a nice balcony and very lovely bathroom(incl. Rituals toiletries) The layout was rather interesting in my opinion but it was ok, breakfast was a bit lacking in selection though.

Overall lovely stay and would stay there again!

This was our second stay at Hotel Grand Philadelphia, and it was again excellent ! We asked same room (20), and we found it in exact same state as 2 years ago: huge, spotless, big bathroom, quiet though overlooking the street (double windows very effective, and airco very silent). Chic decor, king size bed, nice duvet, pillow and mattress, complete sitting area (2 leather chairs + 1 sofa), big cupboard, plenty of space, ... What can you ask for more ? Yes, just a few things: no minibar, no kettle in room, not much hangers in cupboard, not much channels on TV (8 only, mostly Dutch).

Hotel is still full of charm, in this old brickhouse, staff extremely friendly. Neighboorhood is superb, 2 minutes walk from Veerhaven where you can take a watertaxi to Hotel New York to see sunset on the river, between the 2 gigantic towers on the small Manhattan ... Beautiful ! Breakfast buffet very complete, fresh orange juice squeezed at the minute for you.

Again, looking forward to my next stay in beautiful city of Rotterdam, and it will be in Grand Hotel Philadelphia !
PS: price is cheap for the space and quality that you get there, really !

  • Liked — Huge space, charm, cleanliness, location, price !!!
  • Disliked — No minibar, no kettle in room

Not the most welcoming of hotels with a rather dingy reception area and a most peculiar smell of - well - sewrage, or stale cabbage really! However, the staff were helpful and the room we stayed in on the first floor was excellent (and non-smelly!). It was a modern twin room with duvets, en-suite with bath and shower, and a balcony out side, though the view of the rear of the adjacent building was nothing to write home about!! One point of note, particularly for us Brits who like their tea, there are no coffee or tea making facilities in the room - take your own kettle! The room was clean, although the towels a little on the small side.

Local facilities were a little sparse, and we would DEFINITELY suggest giving the local bar (The Cave) a miss, unless you are into the seedier side of Dutch life. Many young women of various nationalities and older men, if you know what i mean....

One local spot you don't want to miss is the Euromast, particularly for lunch or dinner in the restaurant half way up. The views are spectacular and the food is excellent.

  • Liked — Clean modern room
  • Disliked — No tea!!
