Owner description: The Kunsthal Rotterdam is one of the leading cultural institutions in the Netherlands. With over twenty exhibitions a year, the Kunsthal offers a programme that is dynamic and always surprising. The Kunsthal is continuously transforming, and with its regularly changing exhibitions able to offer crossovers between various art disciplines. From modern masters and contemporary art to forgotten cultures, photography, fashion and design. The Kunsthal's exhibition programme gives it its national scope and international allure. In its iconic building designed by Rem Koolhaas, the Kunsthal stands for three core values: art, culture and society. The Kunsthal is not a museum, nor does it wish to be. Not having its own collection gives the Kunsthal absolute freedom, and making optimum use of that freedom is where its strength lies. With a small team, a wide range of exhibitions and activities are realised with a high turnover rate for a diverse audience. This is what makes the Kunsthal different from other institutions in the museum sector.

I have always enjoyed the collections at this museum. They do not have a fixed collection, but switch every 6 months (or longer periods) to new art shows. They always surprise me!

“Always interesting special exhibitions”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2013

A group of friends visited this modern art museum to enjoy the Maliol exhibition. We had arranged for a guided tour of 90 minutes
A guided tour can be arranged through 'Buro Mooi Gedaan', 010-4121207, mooi.gedaan@planet.nl, but has to be 'ordered' some days in advance, maximum size of group 20 persons, no minimum size of group, costs €65.
We loved the way the art was displayed. Lots of room to walk around the statues. Also a sensible progression of his work in paintings and statues in the exhibition. The video interview with Maliol in 1944 was very interesting.
Basically this museum hosts well presented exhibitions everytime I visit. Well worth your time and money.
The museum can be reached by Metro (station Leuvehaven, easy walk over 'Vasteland' walking away from the water) or by Tram 7 or 20 (stop Vasteland)
Always closed on Monday (most museums are in the Netherlands)
Open Tuesday till Saturday: 10.00-17.00 ; Sunday and National Holidays 11.00-17.00

Want to know more about the building of the museum?
There is a free downloadable podcast in English in 4 parts that talks about all there is to know, taped by the fenomenal storyteller Willem de Ridder on the website of the museum http://www.kunsthal.nl/22-5-Kunsthal-Rotterdam.html, under 'EXTRA'
Download hier: hoofdstuk (= chapter) 1 (auditorium), hoofdstuk 2 en hoofdstuk 3 en extra hoofdstuk 4 (Museumpark).

Money saving tip:
In Rotterdam you can visit the 5 museums with the Museum Park Ticket, among which the Kunsthal (entrance fee €5, special exhibitions usually charge an extra entrance fee), Boymans van Beuningen, NAi (Architecture Institute), Chabot Museum, Natural History Museum. Costs of Museum Park Ticket €27,50. This ticket is valid for 6 months and saves you €19,50 on the entrance fees of these museums.

HOWEVER, there is a BETTER DEAL to be had: If you are in the Netherlands to visit museums all over the Netherlands (or even just in one city) and you plan to visit more than 3 museums buy a Museum Year Pass to the Museums in the Netherlands (in Dutch: Museumjaarkaart). Eventhough you are not there for a year it simply saves you a lot of money on entrance fees as many of the important museums like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Boymans van Beuningen, Nederlands Architectuur Instituut, Anna Frank museum, and many, many more can be visited for FREE with this Museumjaarkaart (Museum year pass).
Regrettably the Kunsthal can NOT be visited for free with the Museum Year Pass. But the other 4 museums of the Museumpark ticket can be visited with the Museum Year Pass which can be bought at most major museums (like Boymans van Beuningen). Costs: €49,95, which means that for €22 more you are getting a good deal.
A list of the free admission at museums can be found here
Museums listed in italics also sell the Museum Year Pass at their ticket booth.

“Jean Paul Gaultier and Mummies”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

In the last two years we visited the Kunsthal several times. The last time was during Jean Paul Gaultiers exposition, which was very nice. The pretty outfits and creations were great. Also, the Mummies exposition two years ago, was great. The Kunsthal is a great venue for temporary exhibitions. The staff is very friendly. The location can be changed so it suits every exhibition. We really enjoy visiting the Kunsthal once a year.
