I booked the Hotel van Walsum for a 1 night stay whilst we were on a mini cruise from Hull to Rotterdam. The coach from the Europort dropped us off at Central Station in Rotterdam at 9.50am. We were all provided with a free city map by the driver and it took us only a couple of minutes to plan a route to the hotel through a residential area of the city. We arrived at the hotel at 10.10am. We were well aware that check in time was 2.00pm but asked at reception if we could leave our bags somewhere whilst we went off to explore. We were pleasantly surprised when we were told by the lady on reception that our room was ready and we were quite welcome to check in there and then.
We were given a room on the 3rd floor, there are stairs and a lift to all floors. The room was obviously newly renovated and was spotlessly clean, and of a very good size, we have stayed in hotels of this price range in Holland before and have ended up with very pokey rooms.
One wall was taken up completely by the window which had patio doors leading to a pleasant balcony which overlooked the small but very nice hotel garden and outdoor seating area, lovely for summer, but not on a clear cold November day.
The bathroom was spacious and very clean, with a shower and bath, toilet and hand wash basin. Shower gel and handwash were provided along with a selection of towels, and a hairdryer.
The room itself consisted of a very large comfortable bed, a flat screen TV with remote, a remote controlled heating system which worked very well, table, 3 chairs, kettle with tea/coffee etc, an ironing board and iron, a fridge, and a safe. All the bedding was very clean and extra pillows were in the wardrobe. There was plenty of storage space for clothes, bags etc. Some hotels I would say are adequate for just a 1/2 night stay, but the van Walsum would be ideal for a much longer visit.
The reception and public areas were all very clean, very well decorated and looked after. The staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble.
We initially didn't book the breakfast which was an extra €13.50 per person, but after wandering around Rotterdam we realised that there was no where close by offering that sort of breakfast for the price, so we booked the breakfast for the following morning.
Our room was at the back of the hotel away from the road and was completely quite, the only noise was the occasional whirring of the lift but that was not a problem.
Breakfast the following morning was buffet style and there was an excellent selection, fresh fruit salad, cereal, bacon, scrambled eggs, continental meats and cheeses, the list goes on, needless to say we were very pleased as I don't think we could have got that sort of selection and quality elsewhere for the price.
Check out is at 11.00am, we were not being collected to return to the ferry terminal until 5.00pm so we asked if our bags could be left at the hotel for collection later. This was not a problem and the bags were taken and locked in a secure room to be collected at 4.00pm.
Can't fault this hotel in any way, it's close enough to walk all the attractions, the Euromast, Spido boat trips, the maritime museum, shops etc, but remains in a reasonably quiet area.
We would most certainly return here if we visited Rotterdam again.
