“Tucked away gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2012

Booked this B&B for myself and my wife on the strength of previous reviews and not disappointed. Johan is the perfect host, rooms are impeccably clean and comfortable with breakfast different every day. Great little touches everywhere through the b&b with free wi-fi and ensuite bathrooms. Why anyone would want to stay at a soulless big hotel is beyond me! Johan also offers advice on what to do and see and good local eateries. The stairs are pretty steep but then this probably isn't the place you would bring small kids!
Rotterdam is easy to get around and the b&b is only 2 mins walk from a tram stop; within 10-15 mins you are at central station.
I highly recommend you get the rotterdam welcome card - its about 13 euros each for unlimited tram, bus and metro use and vouchers offf for various restaurants, museums and attractions for 2 days use (you can get one for 1, 2 or 3 days - just be aware that each day is literally until midnight and isn't calculated from the time you use the card; for example if you buy the card at 1500 hrs on Friday for 2 days, it will run out at midnight on saturday night)
Metro and tram run to about 1am
Loads of places to eat - Lof der Zoetheid (they have a website), which is close to the b&b; great lunch full of locals (always a good sign), Spaghettata (on Nieuwe Binnenweg 151) - good italian, again was packed. The lunch hall upstairs at De Bijenkorf is a good place to stop whilst shopping and Dudok is a Rotterdam institution.
And if you like your Belgian/Dutch beers (and be careful with the high percentage ABV ones!), check out Boudewijn on Nieuwe Binnenweg - big selection on tap.

Room Tip: 2 rooms to choose from; just ask Johan which is available

This is truly a great b&b in a quiet place in Rotterdam. I stayed one week in one room and after a month traveling in Europe I came back to Johan b&b for another 5 days and stayed in the other room. Both rooms are super great and quiet with private shower and toilet, Wifi and TV. The house is amazing, great environment, relaxing and just beautiful. Breakfast is AMAZING!! Tasty and also healthy, I just loved it. It is located 20 minutes walking from the train station, 2 minutes walking from a tram station. Supermarket is just 5 minutes away and the owner is a wonderful, relaxed and super nice person!

Room Tip: both rooms are great!

het Hemelrijck is indeed a hidden gem, I stayed there for two nights and truly enjoyed. Johan makes the B&B in colorful, cheerful and cosy atmosphere, I felt like staying at a friend's home rather than any else. Johan knows the difference between home and house, has been devoting himself to make it as a home for every guest. Thanks Johan, for your warm hospitality and hearty tasty breakfast!!

What a great idea we had to go to hemelrijck b&b!!! We spent 3 nights there and really felt like home. The room was so well decorated, the breakfast was fresh and delicious, and last but not least the owner is truly kind and helpful.
So many little details make your stay unique and unforgettable.
Also, the area is nice and easy to reach.

This B&B is a hidden gem - with beautiful interiors, character and an equally fabulous host - Johan - who cannot do enough for his guests. The hotel is tucked away in a quiet residential part of the city - but just 15mins walk from the train station in the centre. The room was up some very narrow winding steps - and when we got to the top, not only was there a pretty lobby complete with teas, coffees and scrummy chocolates (pretty teacups and saucers) - and any additional toiletries and towels in a French-style cabinet - but an equally, creatively-designed double bedroom. The room was spacious, with a sofa and TV too. The bathroom large and again - pristine with all its decor carried out to the finest detail. Breakfast each morning was a real treat - complete with breads, muffins, pastries, eggs (how you like them), yoghurts, cheese, ham, cold rice puddings, fruit and freshly squeezed orange juice, incredibly good coffee, jams - and chocolate/coloured sprinkles (a Dutch trend for bread) . . the list goes on - as the mouth-watering breakfasts all varied each morning with at least four to five different things on the menu - AND by candlelight! Johan is a superstar!

We booked four nights at Het Hemelrijck and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We were greeted with the warmest of welcomes and shown to one of the two simply and elegantly decorated rooms (the stairs are quite steep, but it all adds to the charm). Johan is a wonderful host, who not only provided us with a splendid breakfast every morning, but offered friendly advice on the city and where to eat in Rotterdam (we can recommend Doen – Dorst & Trek on Berkelselaan 2a and Dunya on Proveniersstraat 40a). It provides a great base to explore the city being only 20mins walk to the central train station or even less on a bike! (There are two which guests can borrow).

Het Hemelrijck has attention to detail in décor and in service that are extremely hard to come by and provides excellent value for money.

Our host Johan is the nicest person we found during this trip and his B & B is delightful in all senses, from the well furnished and comfortable rooms to the perfect breakfast prepared specially by him every morning. The B & B also has 2 bicycles for rent, which we used to explore Rotterdam.
At night, while we were tired of a biking day and decided to go for some wine and cheese at home, Johan set us a lovely table with fine wine glasses and strawberries as a compliment. We loved our stay.
