“Hotel with nice facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2014

If you come by train don't follow the signs to Leiden Central, it's just on the opposite exit - but literally near the train station.
The rooms are modern and cosy with a nice view to the surrondings.
I really liked the spa&fitness part - but don't forget that from 10AM it's dutch style - so no pants allowed.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for you review on Tripadvisor. We are happy to read that you liked the spa& fitness in our hotel. The wellness area is indeed without swimming cloths but every Tuesday wellness guest are allowed to wear swimming cloths if they wish. Hopefully we may welcome you back in the near future.

Kind regards,

I was extremely surprised by my pleasant stay at this surprise find! Was in Leiden for business and booked online with minimal information! This is not a "normal" hotel - reception is small and not well advertised on the ground floor of a large new multipurpose building just as you step out from the Central Train Station - literally just outside the north exit of the station! Rooms are large for Europe, very clean with a wonderful modern functional bathroom, large King Size bed, very comfortable. As I said - the hotel is in a multi -purpose building so it may feel a bit scattered but nonetheless it works. I did not have breakfast as I opted for the multitude of Cafes a few minutes walk away! Wonderful restaurant on the top floor with a fantastic view..... the clincher - if you love to be pampered in a spa.... probably the best I've been to.. come see for yourself!

Except the convenient location, there is nothing good about the hotel. The tv in my room did not work, the showers stink. The design of toilet/ shower doors are terrible, allows no privacy. Never again.

The building itself is new and in the train station area which is newly developed. Train from Schiphol airport is about 10-15 minutes, hotel right outside station. Reception desk is downstairs in a massive hall as it seems this building is shared with a hospitality college of sorts. There are 3 lifts, one on the left only takes you to certain floors, middle and right ones to all floors. Just keep your eyes open when you get in - it's not rocket science and certainly not something to moan about like some do on here. The hotel is clean, modern and practical. The deluxe room had a large and comfortable bed, digital HD TV, nice layout. Bathroom slightly odd but practical enough with one big sliding glass door either covering toilet or shower. Enough towels, hair dryer present, safe, free WiFi. There are two restaurants, Top Level (clue is in the name, great views) and Second Level. We ate in the Second Level and the idea is you choose several small starters and several small mains. All for EUR 25,- Have to say that for hotel food this was a very pleasant surprise and actually tasty and well presented. I've had worse in Hilton, Radisson etc in the past. Breakfast was EUR 15,- which is normal price in European hotels. Selection was good and healthy. Overall you can't really moan for the price of 90 Euro a night for a modern and comfortable hotel in prime location in one of the nicest Dutch cities. Give it a go.

I don't recommend staying here. The staff is friendly and the location is extremely convenient, but that's about all the good I can say. The hotel occupies a portion of a large building that looks like some sort of industrial complex that has no business being in the center of Leiden. The elevators were designed by somebody who was obviously drunk (good luck getting to your room if you are on the 8th or 9th floors). The lines at reception are obnoxiously long. The pool (advertised on their website) is only available free of charge between 7 and 10 AM - after that you have to pay. The bathroom features an open shower without a sloped floor, so if you want to get clean be prepared to flood your bathroom. The physical rehabilitation center directly across from some 9th floor rooms can be rather annoying when people are constantly relearning to walk right outside of your room (canes and walkers repeatedly striking the floor are not a sound conducive to sleeping). The booklet of hotel and area information is only available in Dutch. The towels are tiny (think hand-towel sized). There is no tea or coffee service in the rooms. The room temperature stays constant at about 20.5 C regardless of what you do to the thermostat.

I won't stay here again.

The hotel is perfectly located, directly by the back entrance of the main station "Leiden Central". Modern rooms in the 9th, 10th an 11th floor. A beautiful view over Leiden from a very comfortable bed. The open shower in the bath room is rather nonpractical, though.

A modern hotel in the centre of Leiden with many positive points but some strange idiosyncracies that stop this from being a great hotel. If Hotel Fitland was a car, it would be a '3-wheeler', if it were a pop start it would be Lady Gaga! Personally, I like the slight weirdness of the hotel when compared to many of the corporate chains where every room is identical. For me, the positives outweighed the negatives:

POSITIVES:
1. Great location in the centre of Leiden, practically on top of the train station and within easy reach of local attractions. Bus station and cycle hire just outside the hotel too.
2. Huge gym with many state-of-the-art exercise machines, free weights and great view from the 11th floor over Leiden.
3. Good value for money at 99 Euro with free wi-fi.
4. Amazing wellness centre. Yes, it costs extra but has an amazing layout with 3 saunas, steam room, flotation tank, salt and ice shower, relaxation pods, plunge pools and a beautiful aluminium swimming pool and jacuzzi over-looking Leiden. The hightlight is the sauna ritual which involves different packs of aroma-filled ice (lemon, vanilla, chocolate) being poured on the hot sauna and a huge sauna-attendant wafting around the hot air with a towel, followed by fresh fruit in the cool-down area. Be warned, only Tuesday night is swimwear night, us Brits are not used to 'letting it all hang out', and some things are better left to the imagination!
5. Restaurants. Excellent food and superb views at Top Level restaurant on the 12th floor. Sashimi and Beef Tournedos were fantastic. 2nd floor restaurant has an unlimited food for 25 Euro format, with each dish being medium-sized and really good quality.
6. Service. Everybody is keen to help and very friendly by Dutch standards.

NOT SO-POSITIVES:
1. Hotel Layout. Extremely odd. The reception is on the ground floor and hotel on 10th, 11th, 12th floors. Some of the lifts only go to to the 10th or 10th and 12th, meaning you can get totally lost trying to find the gym or travel to breakfast. Sometimes you need to select a lift going down in order to go up and vice versa. Takes a couple of weeks to get the hang of it!
2. Rooms. Very smart but again some weirdness. All the furniture is at one end of the room, you can only have the loo door or shower door shut, not both, lack of storage space, no iron, no central light switch. The phone system is a mystery with no numbers listed on the phone or easy to follow directory. Bedding is new and very comfortable, but towels are the size of postage stamps!
3. Room Service. First time I stayed, they did room service. Second time, they told me only cold food apart from soup. Surely it cannot be that hard to organise hot food?
4. The gym. As I say above, great large space and machines. They organise classes, such as spin, but nobody turns up for them, so the gym has no atmosphere. No water in the gym, you have to take your own bottle.
5. Breakfast service. The food at the 2nd floor breakfast is pretty good, but again quite a few strange things. Coffee cups are super-small, often no milk for the coffee (only cream or butter milk), the benches are too small to fit your legs under. Staff accost you on the way in, reminding you that breakfast is not included in your rate and asking for a signature - could be handled more gently. But there is a DJ booth in the breakfast room - very handy!

So in summary, staying at the Hotel Fitland is a fun adventure. Allow extra time for the lifts, bring your own water and don't expect room service!

Room Tip: 10th floor is easier to navigate the complex lift system
