We studied the hotels in Leiden long and hard before booking Hotel de Doelen. It had mixed reviews on TripAdviser but we knew the location to be good. And it was; the location was great and the building itself has such potential for something great, but alas it was a let-down inside. Whilst clean, the rooms were dated, old fashioned and sparse. However, by far the worst problem was the overwhelming smell of stale nicotine; it hits you the second you walk through the front door. The culprit seems to be the owner who sits in a small alcove down the corridor and the cigarette smoke permeates every piece of clean air.
We had booked a 'luxury room' top of the range and most expensive. We were shown to room 16, which was 2 inches from the front door and three feet from the breakfast room. The room was big, but old fashioned, and I cannot think where the term 'luxurious' came from. Out of our three weeks in Europe, the Hotel de Doelen was the most disappointing experience. The owner was quite un-interested and we felt 'a burden' when asking anything. We couldn't wait to leave (after a sleepless night in a very soft bed, much banging of doors and shouting) and opted not to take breakfast as we couldn't face any more passive smoking.
