“Classic hotel with a great location.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

A very nice and classic hotel with a great location on a central canal in Leiden's center. As with most historical Dutch buildings, the rooms are smaller than average, but in no way cramped. Staff was very friendly.

This is an old, but well renovated, hotel. It has fairly steep stairs and no lift, although the receptionist will quickly volunteer to help you with your luggage. We opted for a ‘luxury’ room, which proved to be rather an overstatement for what was a fairly ordinary room, although it had a very good bathroom. (As he had requested a bath, I suppose you could say that we got what we asked for). The furniture was a nice mixture of the old and the new, with a very comfortable bed, comfortable armchairs and a wardrobe which was kept closed by a Leiden brochure wedged under the door. Wifi connection was consistently excellent, whilst reception on the small (and badly situated) T.V. was hopeless. The central heating worked, but struggled to heat the bedroom above 18 degrees in mid April. Breakfast was excellent, being copious and of very good quality. The location of the hotel could hardly be better, being an easy walk from the station and all the tourist sights. The staff were quick to be helpful at every opportunity, and obviously wanted to please. Altogether, I would recommend this hotel to anyone who wants something different from the bland and soulless experience of a chain hotel.

The hotel is in the centre of the city, 10-15 minutes walk from Leiden Centraal station and also close to Old Town.We spent one night at the de Doelen.Staff is very friendly and helpful. Although the hotel overlooks to the canal, our room was looking to backyard whish is fine for one night. We didn’t have our breakfast so we can not comment on it.Heating,wi-fi working well .The room, sheets ,towels were clean.

I was taking a course at the ITC and this was 200 meters from the facilities. It is run by a nice family. The hotel is really old, but the bathrooms are new. No air conditioning, so it wa a little hot sometimes. I enjoyed my stay.

We found the hotel facade and the location of the de Doelen to be excellent. There was nothing else about this hotel that was at the 3 star level, however. The staff were disinterested, our (deluxe) room was tired, cramped, and stuffy -- just uncomfortable. We couldn't wait to leave.

We are a Australian couple travelling around Europe for 6 months, this hotel was special with loads of charactor, do not expect 5 star expect a nice warm cosy place to stay, the staff make you feel welcome, nothing is too much trouble and breakfast is delicious, washing was done perfectly and the room was clean and comfortable, the hotel is in the centre of the city, walking distance to everything you could want.
Leiden is a mini Amsterdam, canals run though the city, bikes, bikes and more bikes, this makes the city alive and energetic with university students everywhere...we loved staying in this hotel for 6 nights and a big thank you to the staff for making us welcome.

Leiden is a charming town and this hotel was quirky but fine. Lots of character! Right opposite a canal, and not totally renovated, it feels like it belongs in this place. Don't expect grandeur...it is a bit faded, but we had a room overlooking the canal which was huge, a large and well renovated bathroom, it was a quiet and quintessentially Dutch location. Transport to and from the tulip festival was easy and you were walking distance from everything there is to see in Leiden. We also spent a day cycling out to the North Sea and that was fun, and easily done from here as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the canal
