“Expensive for what was on Offer”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2012

I had to travel to Holland for a large trade show which I do every two years and as I had stayed in this hotel before I choose it again , however this time I booked an Executive room - the Management have spent some money over the last year ! - The room was very nice - new decor and furniture and comfortable - however this was not matched by the housekeeping - water not replaced - stained and old bathroom towels , one bed rope instead of two and no slippers - the bathroom cosmetics were not refilled in three days and no newspaper was ever delivered - on the other hand the food was of a very high standard - first class selection and well presented ! - would I stay again - perhaps - but if a hotel spends the kind of money they have done they would need to sharpen up on the little things which make the difference between average and very good - the executive room was not worth the money !!

Room Tip: Go for a basic room and don't expect too much !!

My wife, mother and 3 kids stayed 5 May to 8 May. This appears to be an "L shaped" old motel which they enclosed adding a pool, breakfast area, etc and refurbished. The rooms are reasonably nice and modern but it does appear that it was an old building that was refurbished. It is not close to the city center requiring a 20-30 minute walk or bus ride (about 3 Euros per person each way, each time) for food options or activities. There is nothing around the hotel of interest or to eat. The hotel takes advantage of this by charging high rates for internet and food (breakfast just under 20 Euros and dinner just under 30 Euros).

The cleanliness was questionable. While it appeared clean, we noticed that the sheets were not changed (one of them had a stain which never moved) and in fact when the beds were made, they were somehow made them with my kids pajamas under the sheets. Not sure how that was overlooked.

On the buffet, there was a large selection of dishes that sound appetising but each time we looked, the food appeared to be old (dry) as if it had been on the buffet for quite some time.

The first night, we avoided it by ordering a pizza from the hotel's room service. They were very poor quality frozen pizzas (the hotel admitted this).

The next night, we decided to try the buffet anyway because we were tired from the long day and didn't want the pizza again. We ended up getting food poisoning. When this was reported to the hotel, they asserted that they take it very seriously and would investigate. I was not expecting anything but the initial response was impressive.

They called me back to report that they didn't believe it was their fault becasue they had checked with their suppliers and everything was fine. What supplier would tell the hotel that they caused an issue? The hotel aggressively asserted that it must have been where we had lunch (McDonalds) which was much earlier in the day. This was insulting. In addition, they still charged us for the meal.

They are very friendly and try to be helpful but in the end, it is not as much of a bargain as it seems, and we wish we would have paid a bit more to stay in a better location with more food and entertainment options. We ended up paying just as much (with meals, travel, etc) while wasting time traveling back and forth from the city center and being less than satisfied with the food.

This is your precious holiday time. Don't risk it.

Room Tip: I can't imagine staying on the ground floor with the noise of people in the atrium area and walk...

This hotel would be good for people doing business in the vicinity, or families travelling round Holland. However, for us visiting Leiden to see our son it was inconvenient. A half hour unpleasant walk, 3 stops on not entirely reliable buses or a ten euro taxi to the centre.

Aside from that the hotel is set amongst busy roads. The room we initially had was faced on to the inner atrium where the restaurant is with no window to the outside. We changed rooms and were charged extra. In the new room the kettle didn't work and my nightie went missing as it was taken with the laundry and was returned the next day.

Breakfast is 19 euro each. We didn't partake but got charged for 3 breakfasts when we left. Apparently they always add a few charges for breakfast as they assume guests will have a few, with no evidence that they have. Felt like a scam.

Dear Davy3,

We are sorry for the inconsistent service. We assure you that this type of service is not typical at the hotel nor is it acceptable and we will make sure to correct the issues. We appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us. We know you have many choices when it comes to lodging and we hope your future travel plans will continue to include IHG.

We were heading for the tulip park Keukenhof (excellent!), and wanted to see Leiden as well, so staying here was a good combination. The courtesy van into Leiden does not operate on week-ends, but there is a bus stop across the street. This hotel is a fairly large operation with 2 wings surrounding a large atrium with a garden restaurant. Avoid the rooms on the ground floor, and go for the outside rooms which are less noisy.
We had a package with dinner included the first night, and the buffet was adequate. The buffet breakfast was good, and praise for the cook who managed to keep the soft boiled eggs to stay soft all morning. How often does that happen in a hotel restaurant?

Room Tip: Go for outside rooms on the second or third floor

Stayed for 4 nights with my 2 grandkids, aged 9 and 7, over the easter weekend. We had a lovely welcome and checked in at 11am with no problems. The children received a welcome pack.
Our room was very spacious with 2 king size beds. It was very clean and had everything that we needed. We overlooked the restaurant which had a large water fountain complete with fish and turtles. It was left on all night, if you are a light sleeper, you will hear the water running.
The hotel put on extra entertainment which was excellent, bouncy castle, egg painting ect.
The food was excellent but a little pricey. £32.50 for the evening buffet, but kids eat free.
The kids loved the swimmimg pool, they would have stayed in the hotel every day!!!!
We took our car into Leiden, less than 10 mins away, beware , the parking charge is14 euros per day!!!! There is a shuttle bus in the morning/evening.

Room Tip: ask for a room overlooking the restaurant

Room was good and clean, we had inside opening onto a large atrium. Few rooms opened directly onto carpark (outside ground floor) Pool was lovely, and good play area for all ages (pool table and table tennis for older kids, ball pool for younger) Staff extremely helpful (our car was broken into in another part of Holland on the way to hotel) especially Reception and Nikco the bar man who helped tape the window and provided the cardboard etc. For that reason I recommend this hotel highly as in our time of need they were excellent. Many thanks to all.

Room Tip: If you do not like rooms opening onto carpark ask for room inside or not on ground floor.... However...

I have a hard time giving more than 3 stars to any hotel that charges 150/night and still charges 15/day for internet. Overall the hotel was very clean and nice and great for families. The child area was decent and the pool was very nice. The interior rooms face a large atrium that is where the restaurant seating is so it's very noisy if you have an interior room.

Location wise, if you don't have a car, avoid this hotel. If you do have a car, it was very easy to drive to the edge of Amsterdam (Arena Parking) and hop on the metro into the downtown area. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful with tourist type stuff.

Additionally, when I got my bill on check out, they added multiple breakfast charges to our room, which were incorrect. Once I notified them they took them off, but I got no explanation as to why the charges were there.

All in all, I would recommend this hotel because it was clean, nice, and very good for families. If you plan to visit Amsterdam, I recommend driving to the Arena and parking, then taking the metro downtown. Very simple.

Der Haag (MC Esher Museum) and the big Tulip garden were relatively close as well.

Room Tip: Interior rooms are noisy due to open atrium seating.
