“"Fortress" Hotel in a very quaint town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2013

After a visit nearly 25 years ago, I had a chance to visit Veere again with my wife and two college aged sons.

If you have a day or day and half to spare, try to make the trip to Veere, NL. You can check out the town in detail on-line, but in summary its a VERY quaint town directly on the Veerse Meer (sea) about 90 minutes north of Bruges and 90 minutes south of Rotterdam. Short history – founded in 1200 its wealth was based on the Scottish wool trade which allowed it to build some pretty neat towers, houses, ramparts and a small “fortress” . The hotel Campveersa Toren is built in the old fortress.

So on to Hotel Campveerse Toren…
- Nicely appointed, relatively good sized and recently renovated rooms. In room coffee maker. Free Wi-fi.
- Many rooms with nice views on the quay or sea (about 25 feet away)
- Pretty new bathrooms done with nice tile and fixtures. No bathrobes.
- But, keep in mind, it’s an older hotel (opened in 16th century), so no AC and heat is controlled via a knob on the radiator (works fine, as long as you know that this is the system)
- Some rooms are in the walled fortress; some are in the attached building along the quay. There is good info on this on their website
- Parking is about 50 yards away in the public lot but only 5 euros per day sponsored by the hotel.
- Breakfast is included, and is meal; bread, rolls, cheeses, meats, boiled egg, served at your table. Plus small buffet with fruit salad, yogurt, cereals, etc.
- Staff is small (two), but very attentive

The Hotel restaurant is really something special. It’s in the fortress tower and seats only about 20 people. The food is extremely well prepared and presented… with a focus on local fish and lobsters. There is a very good wine list. But, its not cheap… a group of six with two courses each, desert, beers, two bottles of mid-range wine, after dinner port was about 580 Euros. But to be fair, it was “Veerse Meer Lobster season” and three had lobster (at about 60 Euro per person).

If you are looking for something a bit away from the typical tourist spots, want to spend some time on the Veerse Meer, maybe rent a bike, and experience a real “fortress” I’d highly recommend this hotel and restaurant.

We really enjoyed our city break in Veere. The hotel was perfect and we were amazed by the large garden of our room (Room 17!) and the relaxing atmosphere of the garden and the room. There was a lot of space in the room, the only downside that you hear the other guest very clearly when they walked down hall and in the room above our room. It is a very old building, which was not designed for minimizing noise ;-).
The restaurant in the hotel served a really nice dinner (although a bit expensive) and breakfast was more than sufficient.

Room Tip: - Please ask for room 17 if you want a large garden!

I must admit that I love historic hotels but due to frequent trips usually try to save. This time the circumstances allowed to spend a little more and we didn't regret. The reception, restaurant and the main building rooms are located in the medieval tower on the banks of Veerse Meer. And I loved both the interior and exterior. The pier behind the tower is ideal place for walking and enjoing the views. The breakfast (you'll get it in the main building (the tower) was good but my mood was dominated by medieval interior of the restaurant. Can't say much about tower apartments, our room was in one of the adjacent buildings but it was big, extremely clean and very charmingly decorated recalling the bedrooms of times half a century ago. To sum up it's place that worth to visit especially if your route lies in this direction but there isn't much to do in Veere itself - small town with a small central are with several restaurants and shops.

We stayed here for 2 nights. Our room is in a block away from the main hotel. The room has a nice view and all facilities you need. The stair is extremely steep with small steps, not really suitable for the some guests. The staff were really friendly and polite. We ate at the restaurant on the first night. Food was not bad. The view from the restaurant was superb as we were given the table by the window. Overall pleasant stay.

My wife and I decided to go to this old location, because we love to go to castles etc and this hotel is located in an old tower.

On arrival the first thing we noticed was that the hotel is not for all, if you book a room in the main building, please note that the stairs are still in the old fashion, meaning that it is difficult for handicapped and older people (there is no elevator), the reason for that probably is that as it is an monument it is virtually impossible to change anything in or on the building (we have very strict laws and rules on that).
The room we had, room 1 looked lovely, it had a great view and a nicely looking bathroom... we had no problems with wind or cold, however please do note that it seems that they have a boiler that is used by all three rooms, so if you are the last one to take a bath than you won't find anything else than cold water (that happened to me once, but the other days it was fine).

The restaurant part (and the cafe upstairs) look nice and have a great view!... The food is good too, also no complaints about the breakfast, however in the restaurant you do need to be prepared to wait a bit... so if your in a hurry or have young children, just go somewhere else.

The staff was pleasant, friendly and helpful.

Another thing I can say about Veere and the Hotel is that the town is an ideal place from which you can visit the other towns in Zeeland, Vlissingen 13 KM and Middelburg 6 KM are very close by (biking distance) and the town is lovely too... just very small.

All in all we might come again, though in my opinion the price of the rooms should go a bit down to be really in line with what you get.

Room Tip: If you go to the hotel, go before the 1st of april as then you don't pay any parking fee and it...

This old inn is located in a most beautiful setting overlooking the Veerse Meer. We stayed for 2 nights in room no 4. It was a lovely old room with all the modern trappings. It was clean and warm. Beware of the stairs though, they are very steep! As in a lot of hotels, the shower door over the bath leaked water unto the bathroom floor!
We ate in the restaurant both evenings. Food was delicious and service was excellent. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was OK. I would have preferred more freshly prepared fresh fruit. I felt a bit guilty about taking a second bowl as there was only a small serving bowl of it on the buffet table. No choice over eggs, they came hard-boiled whether you wanted one or not.
If you are planning to eat in the restaurant, do ring ahead and book a window seat. There are only 3 and they offer superb views over the harbour.
