The Lange Jan (Long John) Abbey Tower in Middelburg is the crown of the Abbey and the old center of town. The tower is visible from most of the town, so it's natural that people want to climb it and see the lovely town and the surrounding countryside from above.
It's 207 steps up to the viewing gallery, and they are for the most part quite narrow and steep. It's to be expected that one is a bit out of breath after the climb. It is a bit disappointing that there is no access to the very top gallery where the carillon bells are located, and especially that there is no open air viewing facility at all. The views are pretty good on a sunny day, but not spectacular.
Entry is 4€, which is a bit much for a visit to a stuffy room with pigeon feathers on the floor. The ticket girl downstairs seems to not expect anyone to address her in English. She certainly doesn't understand the words 'ticket' and 'cash'...
