“Don't miss the breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2014

Very nice and welcoming hosts, the rooms are beautifully decorated with hand-picked items.
We had a little balcony looking down at the garden and some chickens. There was free coffee and tea in the room and the mini-bar was awesome: smoothies, organic lemonade, nice wine, etc. - not the usual commercial stuff.

At night this is a quiet place that allows for a nice rest.

Don't miss the breakfast! You get anything your heart desires. A real coffee machine pampers you with fresh coffee, there is regular and soy milk, fresh fruit salad, eggs, cheese, ham, different types of bread, cereals and much more. All of it high quality.

I don't know how easy it is to get there with public transportation but by car it was a bit hard to find. Don't give up, you will be rewarded.

I was immediately met by Marc, who carried my suitcase up the narrow steep staircase (very Dutch!) to the top (2nd) floor to show me my room, explain the espresso machine, and give me my key -- no "check-in" in any formal sense. He and his partner appreciate modern art and the place is full of it. Simple but excellent breakfast buffet and Marc will happily cook something for you for no extra charge - one morning I had his pancake (crepe-like) and fried bananas, one morning eggs and bacon and fried tomatoes. I loved everything about the place! I recommend it highly! (You do have to be physically able to do one or two flights of stairs - there's no elevator.) Marc and Ruard live on the ground floor; you have complete privacy as in a hotel, but its their place and one of them is always available to help with whatever.

A great place with a great continental breakfast and coffee. A very nice host and nice, cozy but stylish bedrooms. I have stayed twice and this is now my preferred place in Utrecht. If you can, try to get a room at the top floor - the middle floor is a bit noisy with a shared bathroom, people coming and going.

De Admiraal, about a fifteen minute walk from the city centre, is warm, welcoming and excellent value. The hotel is based in a charming old townhouse, where the owners have cleverly made use of the high ceilings to display modern artwork, creating a stylish, contemporary atmosphere. Extra touches, such as espresso machines in the rooms, are very thoughtful, and the breakfast is a delight. Marc and Ruard are excellent hosts and I would thoroughly recommend De Admiraal to anyone staying in Utrecht.

The first think you notice is the welcome you get, either from Marc or Ruard. Personal, warm and welcoming. No check in procedure, just a warm hello and you're led to your room.

There are only 8 rooms in the the Admiraal. I was in #7. More spacious than you'd expect, given the size of the building. I was given an all-important crash course in the Nespresso machine, for which I will be eternally grateful.

The hotel is actually 150 years old. Marc and Ruard bought it 6 years ago and put their personal touch on the design. Understated, stylish and cool. Breakfast was great (it wasn't included in my reservation through Booking.com and cost €10) and the host asked what I would like and promptly prepared my eggs and bacon in the kitchen. There is also a lovely buffet and coffee/tea/juice. On the first morning I fancied a bit of ketchup, which they didn't have. On the second morning, I asked again and, as one would expect from such a service-minded hotel, there was ketchup available. I love those little details.

Like everywhere else in Utrecht, you'll need a bike to get there. Don't have one? They'll rent you one.

I normally shy away from homey, small hotels, but the Admiraal was Next Level regarding style, service and experience. Brilliant.

Room Tip: I had room #7, which faced the quiet street. There is hardly any motorised traffic, so it was quiet.

There is nothing wrong with the Admiraal, it is a clean and well-priced layover spot within easy reach (by transit) of the train station in beautiful Utrecht.

I only spent a night here, en route to Leewuarden, but it is adequate for solo stays; if you don't mind shared rest facilities on a floor.

Not much of a view from my room (it is on a quiet street), but in a typically Dutch neighborhood and with a decent breakfast.

Nice owners, clean rooms, and not far from a few good takeout eateries.

Downside: shared washroom, small room and steep stairs; it is a good choice for solo travellers, although I would recommend also considering the nearby Oorsprongpark hotel for a better view from the rooms.
