“Good, nice area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

The room was very nice, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was clean enough, but needed renovating. We had a nice view over the pretty garden. Lots of interesting artwork on the walls. It is just outside the centre, but still in an interesting area, about 1.5km from the centre.

I'm a little puzzled by the rave reviews on trip advisor. This is a perfectly decent B&B style hotel, but it certainly isn't the sort of boutique hotel that some reviewers describe. Room was reasonable size - not big - and clean, but rather spartan (with oddly small square pillow and what I assume is an emergency exit light which stayed on all night). Bathroom very small. The breakfast buffet was limited compared to what you usually get in Dutch hotels, and something of a disappointment. The stairs are phenomenally steep! Although the owners were friendly enough, I didn't feel 'welcomed' in the way I have been in some owner-run hotels. It's a perfectly decent hotel, and the balcony was nice, but it lacks charm and for this price I would expect a bit more. I don't think I'd go back.

I spent one night there. Very nice building, nice personal and nice room! Direct bus from the train station with about 10 minutes walk.
I arrived late in the evening and I had a very warm welcome from the personal. It's always nice to fell welcome!

Stayed one night in Hotel the admiraal, and it was a very pleasant experience. Good beds, good reception, quiet surroundings. It is a small hotel, and thus very personal. It is not situated in the city centre, but there is a busline nearby.

Room Tip: there are rooms lacking their own bathroom. And breakfast is very good, but usually not included in...

I stayed in this hotel last year whilst on a cycle holiday in the Netherlands. The room was at the top of the house, very well laid out and quiet. The sheets on the bed were about the most comfortable I have ever slept in! The owner was very friendly and helpful - he gave me a beer on arrival - very welcome after 100 miles cycling. The breakfast was good and plenty of it. If would have liked somewhere safe to store my bike - preferably indoors but instead had to lock it at the bottom of the cellar steps. The hotel was a little narrow but this is pretty standard in Holland. Would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quiet.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

It was good to stay in a quiet residential street and yet not be too far away from the city centre; quite ideal really. But compared to many other places of similar rating we have stayed in Europe, we found our room too small and awkward. One would have to expect this from a renovated house. We note that the bathroom basin was poorly positioned; you cannot bend over the basin to brush your teeth because your head will hit the glass top; a design flaw. The rest of the room needed a lot more shelves and cupboards. The steps were too narrow and steep and certainly we would not recommend this place except to the young and fit.
Marc was very helpful and full of useful information. As for the breakfast, it was adequate. Our impression was that it was minimalist; everything supplied was in small quantities although I am sure we could have asked for more or bigger helpings such as a 2 instead of 1 poached eggs.
A nice overall experience but we will probably settle for a more spacious accommodation next time. Thanks Marc all the same for looking after us very well; our intention in this review is not to be too critical; rather to be informative, constructive and helpful to other fellow travellers.

Room Tip: Ask for the bigger and quieter room

De Admiraal is a small and friendly hotel in an elegant 19th Century town house on the edge of Utrecht. It has a hand full of rooms - the best of which are at the rear and feature balconies overlooking the garden of the house. It doubles as a family home for the owner and provides very friendly and stylish accommodation. Our rooms were comfortable and we were made very welcome. Nespreso coffee and complimentary bottled water in the rooms, generous duvets and tasteful, distinctive decor. The breakfast was excellent - cold buffet and hot food to order.

It is a 20 minute walk into central Utrecht.

Plus - you stay in a beautiful old house, in excellent condition with lots of character. Friendly and attentive personal service.

Cons - none for us, it was perfect. But remember, this is not a modern, hi spec hotel with all the facilities. It's more like a Bed & Breakfast with charming owners and real character.

Room Tip: See if you can get one of the rooms at the back with a balcony that over looks the garden - perfect.
