“Great building; wonderful exhibits.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

Occupying several reclaimed and adapted buildings, and dealing with art, archaelogy, and history, this is a splendid venue. The collection of painting is not huge, but is well selected, with particular attention to the Utrecht Caravagists, Van Baburen, Van Honthorst, and Ter Brugghen. The modern art is also very good. Of special interest this summer and fall is an exhibition devoted to the Peace of Utrecht (1713), which combines art and history in an impressive fashion. The restaurant is limited in its offerings but serves very good salads and sandwiches. This museum is very much worth visiting!

“Utrecht-centered museum for those that are interested.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2013

We visited the museum on a wet and cold day. The exhibits all have interest for Utrecht but it is still generally interesting. The artworks are particularly impressive, going back to the 15th century.

“Interesting exhibits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

I only went to see the exhibits on the religious war, which was fought between the protestants and catholics in Europe. This is a very interesting and educational experience. Plan on spending at least an hour and a half, in that section alone (exhibits 10 & 11). By the way, the peace treaty was signed in Utrecht, and this year (2013) they are celebrating its 300th anniversary.

“Interesting but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

This museum is not easy to find, so have a map of Utrecht with you. It is good on the history of Utrecht in many senses. It is also a museum of art and design. There are interesting temporary exhibitions. But unfortunately there are so many steps. To be fair there are lifts, but the place is really on too many levels to make it a pleasure to visit for someone with difficulty in walking.
