Owner description: Museum Speelklok, the most cheerful museum in the Netherlands! During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok, cheerful live music will surround you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments started back in 16th century the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music, led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs. All of these instruments, including the famous street organ named Arabier and the so-called 8th world wonder the Violina, can be admired and heard during the lively museum tour. Thanks to the highly skilled Restoration Workshop, the collection is kept playing and this craft can be passed on from this generation to the next.

“Amazing piece of history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2014

Really one wonders when they see those old musical instruments driven mechanically and sounding nothing less than amazing. The people back then did unbelievable things with limited resources. If you are in Utrecht you should definitely visit this place. Old musical instruments and old clocks, beautifully preserved. Don't forget to take the guided tour.

“Lovely museum, gave me a lot of smiles”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

We really enjoyed this museum. We joined a tour which was supposed to be both in Dutch & English but unfortunately, it was about 95% Dutch only. (This may be because there were lots of small Dutch children), despite that, it was fun and our guide played lots of music which was very enjoyable. The Moving Magic exhibition of 19th century automata was lovely too and well worth watching the short film prior to going in. We wandered around ourselves after the tour, there is lots to see & hear and interesting explanations in English too. It was great seeing a bit of "yester-year".

“Fabulous collection in beautiful building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2014

Unique museum in the centre of Utrecht housed in a beautiful building (I'm guessing a former church) on Steenweg. It has a vast collection of musical organs and clocks and the tour gives visitors further insight into their origin and the opportunity to hear them being played. Most of the information is provided in English as well as Dutch. The building has a lift thus making it fully accessible, and there is a gift shop and a very nice cafeteria just inside the entrance.
