“OK hotel for seasoned travellers who are prepared and do not require much service.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2012

The hotel is quite centrally located, but as Utrecht is quite small most hotels are central in a way. This hotel at Janskerkhof is convenient for some departments of the university.

This is a converted old building and is quite OK. The facilities in the room are quite modern, and there is a French balcony in my room overlooking Janskerk, which is very nice indeed. Cigarette butts on the balcony are quite off-putting though. The balcony is also perfect for cooling the room. There is adjustable AC in the room but this will not cool down the room quickly. I guess it will work if it is left on for a few hours. The fridge is not stocked, so you have to ask for items if you want a minibar. But this is actually an advantage as you have a whole fridge to put drinks or other things you want to keep cool. Bathroom is OK with small details need fixing. The two single beds put together are comfortable with crisp clean sheets. The desk is very small and not suitable for work.

There is wifi in room for a charge and free wifi at the reception area. As the reception area is minuscule it will not be pleasant for guests to use the Internet there, which perhaps is part of the whole scheme of «free» Internet in theory! The small reception area also meant that checking in and checking out can be a problem.

Restaurant Luden at the hotel served quite good food and was ambitious, but nothing exceptional; the staff was very cheerful though. Breakfast at the brasserie is simple but adequate.

The hotel has a few non-bookable parking spaces at €18.50 per day a few minutes’ walk away. You have to get a key from the hotel to access the car park and to return the key to the hotel afterwards. This is really inconvenient as it is difficult to stop in front of the hotel to return the key – so you end you having to find a parking space after leaving the car park just to return the key! It would make much better sense if access is by a digital code, or if there is a drop-box for the key at the car park exit, or if the hotel sends someone with you when you leave.

I booked this hotel for business reasons.
Welcome is pleasant from reception.
Rooms are old fashioned and not really clean (hair in many places of the bathroom; strange stains on the chairs...)
- Wanna have a drink from the mini bar ? Bad luck it is empty! not even a bottle of water in the room! You have to go to the bar of the hotel and ask the waitress and she has apparently better other things to do...
- Wanna use wireless internet ? You have to call the reception, but the reception phone number written on the phone in your room is incorrect! You have to walk to the reception...
- Wanna use the heater in your room? I hope you are deaf! it makes a huge sound !?

Windows are simple, so that all the noise from the street is in your bedroom; you have hardly seen such a small bathroom: you could wash your hair sitten on the toilets; beds are old and bouncy...

In a word, AVOID this hotel and save your money !!

This hotel is very conveniently located within walking distance of the central station.

The rooms are an excellent size, in fact the room I had was huge. It was in a good state of decoration and although not new showed little signs of wear.

The bed was typically continental (two singles pushed together) with two single quilts.

The staff are friendly and eager to assist.

Utrecht is an interesting city and if you want a centrally located place to stay then this is certainly worth considering.

The NH Centre in Utrecht is an average hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms are small, and my window looked onto the building, so it was a bit claustrophopic as I couldn't really see outside. My fridge did not work, although I did not request anyone to fix it as I was there for such a short time. NH Centre is in an amazing part of Utrecht though, lots of restaurants and shops, right near the canal...I really enjoyed the location. Very close to the Central train station, about a 15 min walk. The restaurant below is very nice with free wifi. I would stay again, but ask for a room with a view of outside.

Great location for central Utrecht (restaurants, art, shops, canals, lanes).
The Hotel building looks promising from outide but inside the common areas and the rooms are too worn-out. Not the standard I experienced in other NH hotels (to be honest, indeed this is officially “only” a three-star. So I could have expected).
My double room was very small. The furniture was average quality and needed some maintenance . The bathroom tiny.
The staff (reception, breakfast) kind and helpful.

A most disappointed experience. An outrageously expensive somewhat well-worn 4 star hotel. I've stayed in better hotels with more facilities and friendlier staff. Wi-fi is not free in the room though can be accessed free in 30 minute sessions in the lobby. And in keeping with tue spirit of this establishment breakfast was not included either. This hotel is the epitomy of Dutch 'zuinigheid' (stinginess). On the plus side it is very close to the central station.
