“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

The old houses of Utrecht can be seen from a boat on the canals, but for a large part, it's also possible to stroll alongside them - lowered from the street. Part of the route provides room to bars and restaurants, other parts are privately owned and on sunny days, you'll find the owners sitting outside enjoying their food or drinks. The area is much less crowded than Amsterdam, but equally beautiful.

“Lovely place and nice atmosphere.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2013

This is one of the reasons why it's worth coming in Utrecht, this place will not find in any other city of the Netherlands, a unique historical center.
It was a exciting experience to walk through the streets of the old town and along the canal, it's all very nice the romantic atmosphere between the many pubs and restaurants are concentrated in this area.
Not only that, in some places you can look out and see wonderful restaurants close to the river, really the best!
All this is surrounded by beautiful buildings architecturally noteworthy.
This is undoubtedly the city that you do not expect.

“Unique world heritage, best viewed from the water”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2013

If you can, find someone with a small boat to go through the canals, or hire one yourself. Because the area is best viewed from the canals, because it allows you to see much more details and also the nice houses. And if you hire a boot with an electric motor, you can also go on the Nieuwegracht, and Kromme Nieuwegracht, very nice and quiet canals. Because unfortunately, the Oudegracht (the main canal) is sometimes overcrowded in summertime.

“Grachtengebied Utrecht”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

You get the flavor of a real old Dutch town when you stroll along Utrecht's canals. Easy to find it's a 10 minute walk from the train station. Plenty of restaurants along the way as well as shops.

“Utrecht in a nutshell”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

The grachtengebied is a great way to explore Utrecht by foot. You get to see the historic citycentre, with loads of shops. Along the Oudegracht (Old Canal) are well known shops such as H&M, Hema, Zara and Mango. Also some shops that are not part of a chain. Like two childrens' bookshops, one on the Ganzenmarkt, just next to the former Cityhall or one just a few hundred metres from the Domtower. If with kids you want to do something fun, visit the Speelklok tot Pierement-museum or the Dick Bruna huis. Loads of restaurants along the Oudegracht, look for one the has outside space along the wharfs, they are unique to Utrecht. You can watch the canalboats, canoes and waterbikes go by. If you feel sporty, hire a waterbike, just opposite the City Hall, or a canoe (near the Weerdsingel) or hop on a canalboat and get a guided tour and see Utrecht from the water. Very worth your while. On a hot day, get away from the hustle and bustle and walk along the Nieuwegracht and enjoy the peace of the pretty views. Or cool down in the Domchurch!
