“Run of mill hotel, clean, good breakfast, rooms differ”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2012

Run of mill hotel, clean, good breakfast, rooms differ a lot. Have stayed on 3 occasions, once was given a basement room (too hot) and last time was in a top floor room, that had a lovely view over the town. Was staying near friends, so location was fine, but if was staying to check out the town, would stay closer to the Dom.

This hotel was rather average. Everything was a bit dated, from the lobby to the corridors and the bathroom. Not very impressed. The hotel is a 15 min. walk outside the centre of town, yet located in one of the more up-scale neighbourhoods. Direct public transport to train station is close.

This hotel is a short walk from the city center. Tucked away in a neighborhood. Nice and quiet area. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were a little out dated and in need of an update. Our room had two single beds pushed together to make a larger one. My bed was well worn - felt almost as if I was sleeping on a cot - the support was totally gone. the shower was nice, but it leaked like crazy onto the floor - the rubber gasket was gone so the water just ran down the door and onto the floor. Seems like the staff knew this since they left a lot of towels for a double room. Since you primarily book a hotel for a good night sleep and a shower in the morning - it would serve the establishment well to fix these issues. Over all however it was a nice stay.

Stayed for one night on a business trip. Lovely on the outside, very well kept and nice rooms. The breakfast was good, and the service was solid. Free wi-fi, payment if using cable internet. Recommended if you are in Utrecht.

The Malie Hotel is situated in a very pleasant residential district around 15 minutes walk to the City Centre sights and very close to the Dutch National rail museum which is worth a visit if you like that kind of thing.

The exterior of the building is very attractive. The bedrooms and public areas would have once been very nice but they are now somewhat dated, although I must say they are very clean and still acceptable in terms of comfort. The breakfast was typical of a Dutch buffet style and was included as part of a special weekend rate. This offer was our reason for choosing The Malie as we have previously stayed at the NH in the centre, which was more expensive and did not include breakfast. The offer made The Malie better value and we'd do the same again.

One thing that was slightly annoying and not what you'd expect of a hotel of this standard - on the second evening, we returned to the hotel around 1am to find the front door locked with a note with the mobile number of the night Receptionist/porter. We tried the number but got no response and ringing the bell didn't get any attention either. After around 10 minutes, we were joined by other guests who couldn't get in. It was a further 10 minutes or so and after we began knocking loudly on the window, we finally managed to raise the attention of the Receptionist. He was apologetic to be fair but I notice someone else commented on this in an earlier review so perhaps the hotel should review night duties before this has an effect on guest satisfaction.

Nice for a short stay. Small rooms that are very clean. There was a light out in the room though which made it hard to see anything in the bedroom. Free WiFi is nice, also a cable available if your company doesn't allow WiFi however there's a charge for that. Nice that you could park outside with a parking pass from the hotel.

There wake up call service really stinks. The automated system doesn't confirm the time, so I had to ring Front Desk to check if it worked, and there is an awful sound on the line when the call is placed. They should really considering in upgrading or, with the amount of rooms they have, could have an actual person making the calls.

The bed was a bit odd, too soft and consisted of two beds made into one, however the person preparing the bed had used to much of the "stuffing" to close the gap making it a small 'mountain'.

Nice if you need to be in Utrecht for a short stay on your own, but I'd probably try to stay somewhere else next time.

The title pretty much sums up this hotel in a nutshell. Complete disappointment in all aspects. Rooms are also very tired, badly lit, the whole hotel is quite run down (the type that have torn carpets). Breakfast - and Dutch are rightly demanding on their breakfast abroad - offered a very low quality spread.

They could work with some more heating; maybe the staff would also be warmer to the customers.
