“Good Location, but hotel needs updating!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2013

I booked the NH Hotel Utrecht for a 1 night stay, and upon arriving at the hotel the check in was swift and we got to our room fairly quickly.

The room was very big, but on the 4th floor there was a smell of smoke coming from the 5th floor, which is the only smoking floor in the hotel.

I rang reception and asked to be changed and the manager came up to our room with our new key for a room on the 2nd floor.

She agreed that there was a smell of smoke, and I even thought that someone had actually been smoking in the room, but she explained that it possibly could be coming from the 5th floor.

The new room was the same size, well appointed, good bed and good facilities in the room.

Over all the hotel is in a perfect location from the train station and is in walking distance to most attractions within Utrecht. On the down side the hotel needs serious updating, paint is chipped, crazy carpet on the floor corridors, and just the whole room needed some TLC.

Would I go back? Not until they update the place with at least a lick of paint...which is sad as the location for me is perfect.

Room Tip: If you don't smoke, get a room as far away from the 5th floor if possible!

As per previous reviews, stayed here for 3 nights for a conference in Utrecht University. Good location, near central station and buses and connections to Schiphol airport. Concrete tower in a 1960s concrete jungle in the middle of redevelopment. Hotel public areas are fine, staff are very helpful, pleasant but bedrooms, corridors, upper floors need; a face-lift, gussy up, make over, overhaul, reconditioning, refit , refresh, refurbish, rehabilitate, rekindle, remake, remodel, renew, repair, restore, resurrect, resuscitate, revamp, revitalize, revive, revivify, spruce up, updating asap.
First impressions were 'heartsink', chewing gum in carpet, torn scuffed wallpaper, scorched headboard below halogen bedside slight, repaired but not repainted door architrave, missing security chain for the door.
Bathroom fixtures and fittings were outdated but adequate, shower head hose was discoloured and corroded, (made me wonder about legionella pneumophila, thankfully no issue).

For the price I've stayed in better University halls or student accommodation. But on balanced its functional, proximate to all amenities, city centre and travel connections and the staff are professional.
Wi-fi was a tad 'fussy' with Swisscom and you had to get a voucher for each day and had to keep logging on if computer went to powersave or screensaver.

Room Tip: Westsplein side

By far, the worst hotel that I've seen this year.
1) Parking is ridiculous-they lock your car with a kind of metal beam, so once that you are parked, farewell! It will be very difficult to take the car and go somwehere quickly and back. And it costs 17 Euro.
2) Hotel is outdated, paint on the walls is from 1970's, old, ugly and dirty.
3) Internet is a problem, you receive a ''free'' coupon for 24 hours in a row. It works very bad and I'm not sure it lasted for 24 hours. I had to buy internet for 9 Euro.
4) Breakfast is 19 Euro.
5) Is a construction site on the back of the hotel, you'll be awake at 6:00 am with drilling noise on your ears. I hope this is just a temporary situation.

Room Tip: Go to Karel V, Carlton President or the other hotels listed on top 5 on trip advisor, this is a nigh...

Normally stay across the way, and only reserved here out of necessity. Have other reviews that talked about the old decor and equipment. I had thought people were exaggerating, but it's true. Only the TV was modern. The room size was good and clean...

Stayed at this place for the 2nd time. It’s probably the most convenient location you can find in Utrecht if you are getting in from the train and out again the next morning. Rooms are basic, internet is ok ok, breakfast is a rip off – 19 Euros. If you’re just looking to crash for the night – this is the place to go. I’ll be back.

The proximity to the Central Train Station is the primary redeeming feature of this rather characterless concrete property in downtown Utrecht. Unfortunately, Utrecht is going through a 20-year rebuilding phase, and the hotel is at the centre of a construction site. Who knows, maybe it too is scheduled for demolition. The rooms are OK, bathrooms a little small, beds short, windows sealed (which keeps the dust out). Breakfast was generally excellent. The lifts are tiny - five squeezed in this morning, despite a theoretical capacity of 12. There is little that could be improved, so demolition might be the only way.

Room Tip: Westerly views are more pleasant - Easterly is the construction site.

Having read some reviews before I left I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. Communal areas looked nice, check in was friendly and efficient. Unfortunately when you leave the reception and the lift doors open at the bedrooms it's a different world. Corridors are in need of renovation, all doors make you wonder what the quality of the room would be like. The actual room was OK, comfy beds, lots of space, wardrobe and full length mirror, tv etc. The bathroom was probably clean but just looked grubby, and in need of an upgrade, but it was functional, and the shower was OK
WiFi is free throughout the hotel and was sufficient for my needs.
I've seen bigger selections for breakfast, but this hotel had most things, juices, fruit, yoghurt, cereal, breads, hot drinks, and a few hot breakfast items. Again the staff in the breakfast area were friendly and quick to clear empty cups and plates.
I'd probably try the Park Plaza next time, whilst I wouldn't rush to recommend the NH it wasn't that bad either.
First impressions good, staff good, rooms poor.
