“Tired and grubby”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

What a dismal hotel, very poor standard of beds, tired decor and lumpy pillows and duvet. Just a very basic hotel. Location good and breakfast suprisingly good.
The view from my window on the third floor is of a crane and the tramline.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on one of the higher floors and then you can distract yourself from the pool quality...

This hotel is not terrible but it's not very good either. I cant say that I enjoyed staying at that hotel.
The only good points are that it's really close to the train station and that the steam iron is of very good quality.
The rest is average to poor.
The breakfast is not very nice, the gym is basic and not well maintain.
The rooms are clean, they are not ugly per se, but there is nothing friendly of homely about them.
The area around the hotel is pretty dead.
I didn't test the spa.
The rooms are very well isolated though. I slept like a baby!

Room Tip: The hotel is near some busy roads but it is very high. At the 3rd floor, I slept like a baby, could...

We have stayed in this NH in Utrecht over 30 or 40 times but I never got round to writing a review before. There is limited choice of hotels in Utrecht despite the huge exhibition and conference centre. This is probably the reason that we have ended up there. We did try the Court Hotel two or three times but we marginally prefer the NH. The rooms at the NH are not quite as noisy and the breakfast is better.
Why do we have mixed feelings? It is probably an accumulation of our experiences there, though over the last three or four visits some of the negatives have improved. I agree that the place is rather institutional, however the rooms are roomy, the views from some of the rooms quite spectacular and the bathrooms are well-equipped. The beds however are too soft. On two occasions the cleaning of the rooms that we were allocated could have been much better (being kind) and I agree that the stocking of the tea and coffee can be erratic. I also agree about the scrum that can take place at breakfast.
The staff are generally very pleasant and helpful, with an occasional exception, and one or two will even say hello if we see them in town. On our last visit at breakfast I was given a birthday present and wished happy birthday both in the breakfast room and at reception. This was a very nice touch. Breakfast is good, though some of the bowls seem to have been reduced in size. The lifts, which are so important, in a 16 storey hotel, seem to have improved significantly recently.
I agree that I would not like to pay the full rate here. It is very convenient for the main central station.

When i first saw the interrior of the hotel i was surprised it's a four star hotel, and when i went on my floor and entered the room, i wasn't only surprised anymore but also shocked. The hallways are very shabby and haven't been renovated in years and room needs also some refreshment. We also found the remains of someone's food in the bar, but that was solved immediately on request, with an apology (we did arrived earlier than the official check-in time). The room is of good size and the bed is very comfortable, although a big complaint goes to the fact that they didn't change sheets for all eight days of our stay, and i know that for sure by the same stain that was there from the beginning. There is a flat screen tv but a lot of the channels aren't available and as an excuse for that they left a note in each room saying they apologise and that you can get a free drink in the bar in the lobby, which we never used. The bathroom also looks a bit dated but has everything you need. What i always appreciate a lot in hotels is good sound isolation and this hotel certainly has it, for i wasn't able to hear any noises at all from the hallway or neighbouring rooms. There are three elevators, but it's a rather large hotel so each morning we waited a lot and eventually was taking fire stairs. There is a free wi-fi and it works ok, just that the connection is a bit slow. But if you want to use their computers in the lobby, you have to pay the internet connection five euros per fifteen minutes, which i personally think is a robbery. There are free fresh made juices each day by the reception, which is a nice detail. There is also a coffee machine, which is also supposed to be free of charge for guests of the hotel, but it wasn't working. The lobby and the bar look nice and new and the brekfast hall also.
The most positive things about this hotel are the position, breakfast and staff. Staff was really trying to make our stay nice, they were all very polite and welcoming, especially the staff at the breakfast hall, who greeted us warmly each morning. And the breakfast itself is very good, there is a wide choice and all the food is fresh. Hotel is situated just next to the central station and Jaarbeurs halls and less than 10min on foot to the very centre, which is very convenient.
Overall, after the initial disappointment with the hotel, after enjoying the breakfast and courtesy of its staff and realising the benefits of its position, in the end i liked it. But there are certainly things that need to be improved, and it should start for example with a more thorough cleaning of rooms.

This business hotel is one of the worst hotels I have been! It smells like [--], rooms are awful, floors are ugly. Beside breakfast and a quite central location, only bad.... So go to another place... By the way the price is not acceptable at all!

This hotel was given a second chance after a dismal visit earlier this year. Unfortunately, nothing has improved. My worst gripe from my previous visit (last March) was that the free WIFI service never, ever worked as advertised. They assured me it was only a temporary occurrence, and that it was being fixed.

Well, guess what? Nine months later and it still doesn't work. I contacted the front desk, and they said that they were surprised to hear it, and that it always works well. I called them on their B.S., and the person working that evening admitted that the LIE TO THEIR CUSTOMERS about the quality of Internet service. The problems have been going on for a long time, and they have not been resolved. Rather than providing customers with reasonable accommodation, they'd rather lie to our faces.

NH Utrecht, never again.

Stayed here one night on a business trip.
Large rooms but very dated bathroom. All business amenities available in the room.
Hallways are dirty and unwelcoming, lobby and seminar rooms are well kept.
Located outside the city center but close to the main train station.
Would not stay here again by my own choice.
