“This is the worst place to stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2012

This is the worst place to stay.. There is no proper internet connection and they charge extremely high rates for outsiders..Cheaters
they charge 7,50 for breakfast and it is poor
they charge 60 cet for a cup of hotwater to make your own tea

the next day we went to the city center and we spend the sameprice a perfect breakfast lesser money

Service - pretty friendly staff.
Value - good value.
Sleep Quality - fine.
Cleanliness - fine.
Location - 10 mins walk to the station. Felt a bit unsafe walking to hostel - a few dodgy characters on the nearby main street at night.
Rooms - sink inside room for brushing teeth/handwashing. Rooms were too dim. We booked a double room but got a bunk bed & a single bed - not very cosy for a couple. Shared bathrooms were good - the shower does stop every 15 secs but it's more than enough time for a rinse & the button is in front of you so it's not inconvenient to press for more water.

Travel tips - if booking a double room, please email them to ask for a double bed.

Overall impression - would stay again if in Utrecht. Common room very cosy & courtyard is very nice. Kitchen is adequate.

We had a lovely time here. Very friendly staff and the rooms were clean. It sure is different than any hostels i stayed in before. They have a big livingroom and we made some new good friends here. We love the fact that they care about the environment, I would recommend this place for sure!

The best hostel I have ever been! Absolute value for money, really nice and well decorated common room, clean and organised kitchen, cabinets with lockers for personal belongings. Clean and well organised common showers and bathrooms, nice woody rooms! Happy and welcoming staff, really a homy place! Definitely the hostel to go in Utrecht!

The pros of Strowis are that if your focus is to stay in Utrecht rather than near Amsterdam, you should be pleased with the central location. It's also reasonably priced overall and has a lovely dining room/common area and outdoor area where they play great music.

However, the downsides were big downsides for my partner and I. Firstly, most staff are fine - and one or two were quite friendly and helpful - but one or two are downright unfriendly. Where the staff sit at the reception desk they actually face away from people coming in, so there's not really any interaction as you come and go. One morning of our stay I was returning to the hostel with some bags of clean washing and was having trouble opening the door so my partner helped, but gave it too much of a shove and it slammed. He apologised profusely right away but the woman working at the time glared and him, turned around and then shook her head.

Strowis, do not employ people who don't like working with people! Few people can work at a hostel and do it well - I've met quite a few already but the dark haired lady does not seem like she's got the right demeanour.

The other big downside is that their breakfast is 7 euro and although it looked lovely (it's organic/fair trade and includes eggs and cheese), there's no way it's worth that price for the average backpacker. The biggest frustrating part about this is that the kitchen is closed until 12pm so it was difficult to self-cater for breakfast (as you can't access cutlery or bowls), although the fridge is in a separate area that we could access. We found a way, but I think it's really unfair and I couldn't see a good reason for why it should be closed. If you're on a backpacker budget like us, bring cereal, milk, a bowl and spoon.

The kitchen is also poorly equipped and has little benchspace. They have an oven, but it's out of use and you can only use the hob. There's a small toaster oven you can use, but there were no trays to fit inside it.

Finally, the showers are on very short timers and you have to press a button to get the water to work. I admire the water-saving efforts but we timed exactly 15 seconds so the result is having to press the button constantly and fiddle between soap, shampooing hair, lathering and rinsing with a sparse stream of water. I think if the timer can be adjusted to be a bit longer, it should.

I found that the above factors seemed to contribute to an overall unfriendly vibe in the hostel. We were thankful that in our last night we met some cool people but prior to that, many people were unsmiling. This isn't Strowis' fault, but I think with improvements to the hostel they could create a friendlier vibe.

It wouldn't take a huge amount to make Strowis a good hostel but in my view, there were just too many downsides.

I have stayed in Strowis once a week for almost a year long because of business travels to Utrecht. This Hostel is central located in the heart of Utrecht and has plenty of shops and supermarkets just around the corner. It takes a 10-15 minute walk from the central station, or 5 minutes by bus.
Also Amsterdam can be reached very quick from Strowis. Amsterdam airport within 15 min. and Amsterdam city center within 20-25 minutes.

The Hostel itself (facilities) was not of very high quality (but what do you expect?), but always clean and comfort! The house itself and the furnishing can be described as typical Dutch. The staff was always friendly and helpfull.
From my experience I can assure that Strowis is one of the best Hostels when looking at the price / quality. If you are looking for a central and clean Hostel in Utrecht, Strowis is the best place to be.
