“Good Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Having stayed in the Lumen hotel more than 10 times I found it a good hotel overall.
The rooms are spacious and clean and the staff is very helpful.
It also in a good location, you have quick access to the motorway.
For the ones coming by public transport it will take you 12-15m to get to/from Zwolle’s train station which is still very good. Regarding places to eat there aren’t many around but the hotel offer a good dinner menu and decently priced also. Alternatively you can go to the city center which is 15m away.

The only negative point I have is, being a “good breakfast” type person it seems to me that the breakfast service has progressively worsened which is a great disappointment for me.

I have been to "Hotel Lumen" in Zwolle many times in the last two years. As a matter of fact, I might have been one of their first guests. During the hotel's pre-opening phase in 2011 I literally lived there and kept coming back later. I enjoyed staying there so much that I feel obligated to finally write a good review.

The hotel is located a little bit outside the city center. When arriving by train, you can either take the public bus (line 70, direction Steenwijk) or a taxi to get there. The ride is less than 10 minutes. If you travel by car, there is plenty of parking space (fee applies) just outside the hotel.

While you stay in Zwolle, I recommend you do as the Dutch do and rent a bike - certainly the best way to commute to work and explore the city. The hotel offers rental bikes for a small fee. You may ask for a package-deal so it is included in your room rate. If you are lazy, you can even get an "e-Bike".

The building is connected to the soccer stadium complex and is brand new, the interior design is spacious and modern. The hotel draws its name from a fancy light installation in the atrium.

All guest rooms are stylish, bright and feature high quality appliances and furniture. In my opinion this is several leagues better than the last-century style you find in other hotels in Zwolle...

The beds are comfortable and the airconditioning is silent and effective - so all prerequisites to a good night's sleep are met. Many rooms are equipped with a Nespresso coffee maker, another nice goody worth mentioning.

If your are traveling for business, you should consider holding your meetings in the hotel. They can provide several meeting rooms of different sizes - I had some succesful business meetings there.

Internet access is available free of charge throughout the hotel. In the early days it used to fail intermittently but those issues seem to be fixed - connectivity was perfect last time I was there.

The breakfast buffet is served in the restaurant "Brasserie Equipe" which is adjacent to the hotel. You can also have lunch or dinner there. If you want to go out for dinner, there are plenty of good options available in the city center, to get there takes you between 5 and 10 minutes by bike (or car).

On the ground floor of the hotel, there is a lounge called "Bluefinger" which is a nice place to meet colleagues and business partners for coffee or a drink - or just to relax and hang out.

The hotel also has a small gym with multiple cardio machines: Bike, treadmill, X-trainer - if only they bought a Concept2 indoor rower I would consider it perfect ;-)
However it is good enough for a daily workout. Weahter permitting, you might also just go running outside - as you are near the city limits, you will find many suitable paths. There is also a public gym ("Achmea Health Center") less than 300 meters away.

What I liked best about "Lumen" however is their lovely staff. As anywhere, people make the difference and I can only tell the nicest things about the team there: Everyone is friendly, enthusiastic and professional. From my experience, they literally walk the extra mile to support their guests.

Just to give you an example: When I asked if they could provide me with an iron and board for my shirts and they had none available, they actually sent someone to a store to buy another iron. On another ocassion someone drove me to the station when a pre-ordered taxi did not arrive - so I would not miss my train. That is what I call customer service.

I have always felt welcome at "Hotel Lumen" and can profoundly recommend the place.

Room Tip: The nicest rooms (in my opinion) are the corner rooms on the upper floors. I prefer the ones facing...

This is a beautiful hotel, very modern and rooms were big and had great facility (espresso machine in room was one of them!). The restaurant is beautiful, very good service and excellent food. I made a few requests to reception and they were very efficient. I asked for an iron/ironing board and it was brought up straight away and I asked for late check-out and it was made possible, at no extra cost.
Really have no complaints, I look forward to staying again.

We were welcomed by a very friendly staff and get an upgrade executive room offered without any costs. The room was very stylish and spacious with free Nespresso (6x coffe, 3 tea) machine. The room was quiet and had a view to the stadium.
The breakfast was very good. No waiting, croissants and so on.
We would stay again.

I stayed here for business. Very modern with good beds, a nice big bathroom mine had a large tub which was good for a relax. Free wifi and a coffee machine in the room which is always helpful. There is a small gym for the fitness freaks like me. The restaurant is fair, nice food nice decor but lacking in atmosphere. It is a little way from the city centre, but nothing a short taxi does not sort out, but in a nice complex close to the new hospital and business areas.
Would I stay agin definitely

I've been there one night for a business trip.
The room was very nice and clean, with a window on a high floor which cannot be open for safety reasons. But customizable airco, therefore was ok. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom not that big but a considerable effort was put in the shower. It is divided from the bedroom by an opaque glass which creates a romantic atmosphere in case you stay in the hotel with your partner.
The restaurant is very good. Nice presentation of the plates, affordable price, nice staff. There is also a nice hall where you can relax after dinner drinking a beer or a glass of wine ordered at the hotel's bar.
Strongly recommended!

Stayed here for a few days in July. The A/C was very good - didn't hear it at all. Yje room was excellent with a cool solution to it. (It's the 3rd hotel in 2012 that has frozen glass between the shower and the bed area. Must be a trend.)

The breakfast was also very nice, a few extra treats witch is always good.

Even though it was outside of the center of Zwolle, I'd stay here again.
