“Perfect!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Librije’s Hotel was amazing: everything was just perfect according to international standards. From the welcome with a glass of champagne and gooseliver lollies to the room, breakfast and the valet service.

Check-in was done whilst seated in the garden, sipping champage. You could set an estimated time for your dinner at ‘de Librije’. A car would be ready to pick you up in case it rained or you were wearing high heels. Restaurant is about a 5-10 min walk away.

When we were ready we were brought to our room, Verveine, where I found the best bed I have ever encountered in a hotel. You just want to dive in and stay there. There was a 2 person huge bath in the open bathroom and great Molton Brown products. Everything was top of the bill.

Let’s not even start about breakfast: this was amazing with delicious little dishes, fresh produce. Even after a dinner at de Librije, I could still make space because everything was so delicious.

After checking out, our care was ready; there were magazines and 2 bottles of fresh mint water in the car. Such a great goodbye.

Will be back next year when we are in the Netherlands!!

Room Tip: Just saw our room overlooking the garden (Verveine). I am sure all the rooms are amazing. The hotel...

We stayed one night and loved it. The hotel itself is located inside an ex-women prison, but you could only tell from the (intentionally) preserved metal doors in the hallways. Inside the rooms there is no way to tell: they are spacious (we stayed in a junior Vanilla suit), have all the necessary amenities (coffee machine, mini-bar), a luxurious in-room jacuzzi (you can watch tv from it), a mini-sauna, nice sound system, new books and magazines to read, lovely Molton Brown goodies...

The service is very friendly and down-to-earth, which is remarkable considering it's a high-end 5 star hotel. They even gave us some verveine-infused water for on the way back.

But the most original thing was the breakfast (not a buffet), a lot of creativity was put into it (which is not surprising considering the 3-michelin star level of the owner couple's affiliated restaurant): mini-pizzas in a box and mini-burgers (fun!), home-made yoghurt, bread, speads and muesli, original juice selection (rhubarb, anyone?), refined menu selection (scrambled eggs with tomato and tarragon, caesar salad etc), and lovely wild berry and white chocolate mousse at the end. Plan to take some time to enjoy it not in a hurry.

Located approximately 7 minuted walking to the city center, you can explore the historic city at your convenience.

Room Tip: Consider paying a little extra for the (junior) suite, the jacuzzi and the extra space are worth it...

We celebrated our first wedding anniverary with a dinner at The Librije and a night in their prime Magnolia suite. Just one word from check-in untill check-out: perfection.

Everything is absolutely worldclass. We were blown away by the attention to detail and the service on every level. Dinner of course was excellent as well, but the combined service of restaurant & hotel tops it off. To have the waiter ask you if they should fill your hottub already when you ask them for after-dinner coffee and then have a deluxe car drive you around the corner without asking (or charging) you is a decadent pleasure I could get used to. Thansk for a memorable anniversary, we will be back soon.

Room Tip: Probably all rooms are good, but we really enjoyed the huge Magnolia suite. For a special occasion...

Set in what was a women's prison, with bars still visible on the outside windows of this stoutly built building, is the boutique hotel of de Librije, one of only two three Michelin star restaurants in The Netherlands. We had a two night stay here in June 2013, in the room called Cardoon (Kardoen in Dutch). This had a large and comfortable double bed, wooden floor and large bathroom with both bath and shower. The hotel has modern decor, with a large central lounge, and it's own two Michelin star restaurant called Zusje, sister to De Librije.

Staff were very friendly, and there is even a butler service; ours picked us up from the train station at Zwolle, which was a nice touch. You can get to Zwolle station direct from Schipol airport these days, the train journey taking just an hour and 12 minutes. One rather interesting feature is that they have left some of the original prison features, including the cell doors, so as you enter your room (through a regular door) you can see the original cell door or doors that made up your room in the original building.

My only criticisms are twofold. Given this is only five years old, there were very few power sockets. I ended up charging my iPad in the bathroom! This seems a bit of an oversight in the modern age, when travellers typically have more than one device they need to recharge. Also, the bedrooms, or at least ours, are poorly lit, with just a couple of sidelights and one small lamp. Not a big problem, but a little strange given the generally high standards of the hotel. This aside, a very good hotel with particularly switched-on staff.

This is one of the most original and interesting hotels anywhere. Your butler meets you at door. Walks you through a seamless check in . And then takes you to your cell. The whole building used to be a prison. Each room has been decorated individually. Great combination of modern and quite old. Great details like the cookies made by one of the country's greatest chefs, fresh fruit juices, incredibly attentive and nice staff. Do not hesitate to go; it is worth a journey. And book a table, far in advance, at the restaurant, which is one of best in northern Europe

Arriving in the librije is already an experience on its on. The butler is there from the first moment, parking the car, and then serving a very nice glass of champaign (ruinart). While tasting, lugage is taken to the room. Our room was called the deulentap, a very nice room with al the things for a very luxury stay. We then went to the faboulous restaurant the librije, driven by our butler in a big mercedes s class. One of the best meals i ever had, in a spectacular environnement. Then back to the hotels wine bar for a coffee and a small brandy. A great night and in the morning a breakfast which is rather different. Conclusion : not cheap but worth every penny

We were welcomed by the butler and escorted us to the reception. The butler took care of our car. we had a very nice, large, room which was very well equiped. Bose surround system, etc...
The hallway to our room was the old hallway of the prison. Even the roomdoors are still the original prison doors.
We took our aperitif in the large roofed terrace, which was very nice. We received great amuses with our Champagne.
The Auping bed made sure to offer us a great night of sleep. The only minus was the 2 matresses instead of 1 large one but also 2 covers. So impossible to make it romantic....
The breakfast overpassed our expectations.
We were very sorry to leave after just one night.
We had our dinner in the 2 michelin star rated restaurant at the hotel, but more about this in my other review.
