“OUTSTANDING last few days in Authentic Dutch Village!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2013

Stayed at this historic Dutch village the last few days of our recent Low Countries trip and we were THRILLED! Only 15 minutes away from Amsterdam if you wanted to use it as a place to enjoy instead of dealing with the hustle and bustle of the big city. We wanted to see this highly rated national monument and use it as a base to visit a few more Dutch villages, Edam and Volendam. Sharon, the new owner, is incredibly professional, amiable and a terrific hostess for her B & B. Skaanse Schans is so beautiful with its location directly on the Skaans River, the little village of authentic Dutch homes and shops....and seeing those WINDMILLS along the river, still working....along with the smell of chocolate at the factory is something that is totally idyllic. Yes, tours and tour buses drop off groups but there were no crowds spoiling the beauty of the town...so there is no worry about hordes of tourists, it was like taking a breather from the hustle and bustle of so many cities to be out in the countryside...seeing the river traffic and looking at the beautiful fields with all of the animals......Sharon helped us offload our car, directed our parking of our car in a secure space...no problem. Then she offered us a different room from the one I booked and of course, we took the bigger suite...WOW! Once inside the dark green, charming inn....she showed us the delightful breakfast room, again beautifully decorated in authentic colors of greens.....the Room we chose was huge....a big room with separate toilet and separate shower...then the kitchen, fully equipped for cooking which we did not do....the beautiful Friesland tiles on one wall around the stove....the wonderful nespresso machine which we did use for coffee...a large table and chairs for snacking or eating if you use for cooking....we did have some internet problems and realized that we only picked up service in the kitchen which was no problem at all...the door off the kitchen also lead to a fantastic, private terrace with place to relax outside and watch the neverending beautiful views...feeling the breeze off the river...and those WINDMILLS.....finally the last room was the huge, very clean bedroom with a very comfortable bed with wonderfully smelling sheets....and those gigunda windows on that scene outside....everything is beautiful.....we enjoyed walking over the little bridge to the restaurant on the water on Sharon’s recommendation for lunch....and we enjoyed the gourmet restaurant right next door for my husband’s birthday dinner....wow....it was so delightful to take the car and drive off to see Volendam and Edam and the countryside in peace....and then to return to this delightful B & B. Every morning Sharon gave us an incredible breakfast....we were overwhelmed with delicious, strong coffee, selection of meats, local cheeses, fruit, yoghurt, muesli, all sorts of breakfast and snack bars....she even came in very early to make us breakfast since we were leaving early for the airport the next day. She did warn us that leaving on an early flight meant that the little 20 mile or so drive would be in traffic jams and she was right. Thankfully, we listened to her advice and gave ourselves extra time....so be aware of that if you want to use this B & B before you leave at Schipol Airport.....Sharon should be absolutely commended for being a WONDERFUL OWNER who is not only smiling all the time, but also so helpful and professional in her advice...making our last two days absolutely WONDERFUL....THANK YOU SHARON and the best of LUCK to you....

Room Tip: JUNIOR suite on the ground floor was fantastic....

Too a perfect hotel.
During my stay,I alway prefer to stay in 5-star luxury hotel. For example ,this October trip,Marriot in Paris,Intercontinental Opera in Paris,Army Plaza hotel in Luxumber. To my suprise, this is the best hotel in my this time trip, though it is just a B&B.
I must say that this is NOT an ordinary B&B,this is my home.
I would stay here next time I come back to Amsterdam! What a shame just stay here one night this time.I promise I will come back and stay longer.

Room Tip: Room on the river side with river view is stongly recommended.

Was a pleasant surprise. It is a B&B but proved to be our best rooms to stay in on trip and wish we had stayed longer. It is in the historic district and house is a historic home. We had bedroom and full kitchen with eating area (this room had ability to have two bedrooms but be aware they would share bathrooms). Kitchen had early 20th century decor with modern appliances hidden.
We slept with windows open (no bugs). boats on the water. Windmills on the river. was wonderful. Hosts were excellent and breakfast was very good.
Step out your door to a private picnic area on the water and then out onto the main street for the historic area.

Room Tip: 1st floor on the water was awesome. Note it is a B&B in a historic home and no AC. The bathroom...

The Heerlijck Slaapen is an amazing place to stay. I booked the room thinking we would be in the town across the lake from the windmill s but turned out to be in the historic village area wher the windmills are located, much to our surprise. I think the room we stayed in was the Het Glop. It is the coolest venue for a hotel room I think I have stayed in in years. The house is an old Dutch home made from hand cut lumber and beautiflly renovated with a modern bath. The room was a little pricey but included internet, parking (big deal for that area) and breakfast. The only negative thing I could say was that there was a lot of light in the room at night from the street lights outside. Other than that it was a lovely accomodation and Sharon, the manager, was extreamly friendly and informative. I look forward to going back for another stay.

Heerlijck Slaapen is NOT your ordinary B&B. It is a preserved structure in a historically preserved area, consequently the owners are only permitted to do so much with renovation...electricity, working bathroom, heat, etc. We stayed in room "Koopmanshuis d'Mol - De Walvis" and, by modern standards is "stark" but we loved it...though it is a little tricky to negotiate the stairs at night. The view of the Zaan from the bed chamber is unparalleled at night and during the day. Breakfasts are typical...meat, cheese, breads, croissants, granola, yoghurt, fruits, juices, coffee and tea. All very plentiful and good quality. Bakery items are fresh from the baker which Sharon picks up on her way to work in the morning. Sharon is a very happy, positive person and helps anyway she can to make your stay pleasant. Zaanse Schans can have a lot of tourists...bus loads...daily but once you enter your room you are sheltered from all of that. We enjoyed our stay very much

You need to be flexible but then you have a great experience. This B&B has three different accomodations. We stayed in "Het Glop"which is an authentic - refurbished - old Zaans family house. With a downstairs lounge - where we enjoyed a sumptuous breakfast - and upstairs sitting room, bathroom and bedroom. About flexibility: as the average 17th century Dutch were about a foot (30 cm ) shorter than we, you need to stoop all the time or bump your head... But after getting used to that it is a great experience to have a 270 degrees view of all the traffic on the Zaan river from your bedroom.
Our host was very friendly and helpful, check in was a breeze, parking is available close by in a reserved space. And you are staying within the "Zaanse Schans" - open air museum of the historic Zaan area.
Next door is a very good restaurant: "De Hoop op de Zwarte Walvis" (One time Michelin star but still very good).

Room Tip: ""t Glop" is the most authentic but needs some stooping (or bump your head). Other ro...

The Heerlijck Slaapen is a bit expensive but well worth the price for comfort and a beautiful setting. The two bedrooms we had both had a view of the water and of the authentic Dutch houses across the river. In addition to the rooms we had a private kitchen and bath which was perfect for feeding a three and one-half year old after a long day in Amsterdam. The little village is has partially been created so is full of windmills, small shops and places to eat. A fun place to spend a weekend! The breakfast was good, not exceptional but satisfying. The location is very claose to the train station to Amsterdam.
