“Gem of a Hotel in a Great City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

What a difference 15 minutes outside Amsterdam can make!
We stayed at Stempels for 4 nights to attend a friends wedding. We were greeted upon check in with a warm, friendly and pleasant welcome.
Our room was (No 20) was bright, spacious and the bed is so comfortable that it was a shame getting up in the morning. Our (huge) windows faced onto a street with a café and other hotel, but even with the deliveries and general hustle and bustle you could hear very little in the room (no sleepless nights had!)
There is lots of seating outside the hotel, which is located on a nice corner behind the Church. With nice weather it is very enjoyable to site and have a few drinks (food is very tasty too) and watch Haarlem go by. Lots of shops, cafes, and bars within walking distance.
The cost is quiet reasonable, and even though I didn't have the breakfast it seemed to be a good selection (there are loads of cafes close by for some variety).
If I was traveling to Haarlem again, or knew anyone going, I would be recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Haarlem is easily accessible by Bus or train from Amsterdam train station or Airport - worth a visit...

A lovely property with many historical details awaits your arrival. The hotel is situated in a lovely square with a quick walk to a peaceful canal. The rooms all vary with wonderful historical details and views of the square and cathedral. The public rooms are tastefully decorated. A wonderful Dutch breakfast is served. The restaurant and bar are very nice and offer very tasteful cuisine and charming atmosphere's. There is a great wine cellar in the historic basement too! The management is very responsive, polite and a delight to work with on reservations. The Haarlem setting for the Stempels Hotel is just perfect. It is a charming town. With a short walk, pass wonderful shops, antique stores, and eateries, is the train stop with a quick and direct route to enjoy the beauties of Amsterdam. Staying here is a must!

Leaving a horrible experience at Amrath Hotel (see other review), we moved over here and would give them five stars on Customer Service! Not only did they take care of us when we were in the hotel, but we ate so well in Haarlem based on their food recommendations. Breakfast is pricey, but again includes amazing customer service and all you can eat. And the hotel is so well located, you could skip that all together and not be inconvenienced. We stayed in the Junior Suite, which was large with a sitting room and a view of the cathedral.

We greatly enjoyed this hotel. It is immediately across from the old church in Haarlem. It is about a 10 minute walk from the Haarlem train station. Service was excellent. Breakfast was one of the best we had on our trip, a little pricey at 12.5 euros per person, but very good typical european hotel breakfast with some extras.

The room was very nice, the only reason I did not give 5 stars was the bedding. The bed is great, but the sheets were worn and had a stain on them. Otherwise this is a great place, I would not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: The square was not too noisy, so rooms in the front are fine.

Having previously been to Amsterdam, we wanted a different experience in order to see the countryside. Our 2 night stay at Stempels was great! Room facing the church was comfortable while not overly fancy. We were afraid that we would hear the church bell chimes through the night, but we never did. Computer in the room was an added touch, although a bit slow. I had to ask for help from the front desk, as the computer didn't initially turn on - someone had disconnected a cable at the back...and I mentioned then to the staff person that the TV and computer cords were very dusty. But the overall room was quite clean. Bathroom drawback is that, while quite adequate in size, there is virtually no counterspace so I had to drag a side table from the bedroom into the bathroom, and still had to put stuff on the floor. Bathroom floor was a step up, which could be a problem in the middle of the night...so bring a night light...the floor had a heater which would be great in the winter - that's why the "step up". Breakfast buffet was actually quite adequate - didn't have a chance to have dinner, though, as we were on the go past dinnertime and ate elsewhere. Elevator was large enough for both of us with luggage. Overall, can't go wrong and I would recommend it highly eventhough it was a bit pricey.

I travel for business and leisure a lot, and was very disappointed at the communication with this hotel. We had booked a one night stay several months ahead, and had to cancel due to an unplanned national holiday (the Queen basically retired and they were celebrating the inaguaration of the new King). This was not known at the time we booked, and we were unable to leave our hotel in Amsterdam due to the media and bleachers built up at the square. When we called to try to cancel, the first person said we called two hours too late, the second person said 24 hours too late, and the owner, who was very rude, said we would have had to have called three days early to cancel. One reviewer wrote "shady" cancellation policy, I would say it's a flat out lie that they have one. When we called them to explain and to see if there was any way we could get there, they told us there would be no parking at their hotel due to the celebrations. We asked about my handicapped father who was traveling with us, and the owner suggested we leave our rental car somewher in Amsterdam, take my father in his walker to the train station, and have him walk to there hotel (my dad has Parkinsons and could not have made this walk). If you are traveling for business, pleasure, or any other reason, don't ruin your trip by having to deal with this hotel and it's staff. We had lunch once across the street from this place at Frans Hals which seems like a lovely hotel with caring staff. I also agree with another reviewer that this hotel is interested in the restaurant and bar and doesn't care about the hotel visitors.

This "3-star" hotel has a lot to offer. The rooms are beautiful and include AC/heat controls. There is an elevator, which is great for use with luggage. The property is located on the central market across from the Great Kirk (church). I did not have time in my one day/night stay to enjoy sitting in front on the hotel watching the market activity (Haarlem has so much to do), but the food and drinks being served looked great.

Each room has been provided with a computer/monitor for your use of the free internet access (and, of course, Wi-Fi for your own). My stay of only one night was not long enough, but I will stay again when I return.

Complaint: Unless you are in the arctic, no one needs duvet/bedding as thick and heavy as was provided.

Note for Rick Steves readers: The 8th edition of this guide does not provide the correct location for this property. (It is on the other side of the Great Kirk.)

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the market square/Great Kirk.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Here at Stempels you are welcome to eat, drink, having a party, to enjoy performances, to organize meetings and stay overnight. This all happens on the premises of the former Joh. Enschede complex, where for many years the Dutch banknotes has been pressed as well as post stamps for a lot of different countries. In other words, a place with a rich history, renovated into a modern hotel-restaurant, full of cosy atmosphere, right in the centre of the monumental heart of Haarlem. The well known Haarlem restaurant owner, Frans van Cappelle, wish to extend a warm welcome to you. On the first, second and third floor of the building are seventeen hotel rooms. The first and second floor are attainable by lift, but if you are in good condition, we recommend the old monumental staircase. There are four comfort rooms, six superior rooms, five luxury rooms, one junior suite and one suite. All rooms are provided with Hästens beds, airconditioning, a flat screen television set, a computer, free (wireless-) internet facilities, toilet and a shower. The luxury rooms and suites also have a bath. Like everywhere in the building one can find original decorations and ornaments in the hotel rooms.Staying at the front of the building one has a magnificent view of the Klokhuisplein and the St.Bavo church. ... more   less
