Die Raeckse is an old café/hotel that has been extended with a block of new Bed & Breakfast rooms above a ballroom (probably built in the 1970s by the look of the design). The "new" rooms are basic and functional - reasonable size and comfortable beds, with simple furniture. Bathrooms are clean and functional. As somewhere to sleep overnight, it's fine.
Downsides - the corridors are a bit shabby and sound insulation is poor. We were woken at 2am by some raucous young people returning from town.
Breakfast is in the much more interesting café with it's faded splendour. It was a very good continental breakfast - fresh and plentiful.
The owners are a Chinese family who moved to Utrecht in the 1980s. They were very pleasant and helpful - provided useful information on how to visit Amsterdam and even allowing us to store our touring bicycles in the ballroom as it wasn't in use.
You get what you pay for with hotels....this is a low cost hotel in a good location (5 minute walk away from the noisy but exciting Grote Markt) but unfortunately on the night we stayed attracted some people who had little respect for other's sleep.
Haarlem is a great city to stay in - and is just 15 minutes away from Amsterdam on the train.
