“Perfect stay...good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013

To start our trip to the Netherlands off, we chose to stay one night in Haarlem to acclimate and recover from jet-lag before moving on to Amsterdam. Because we wanted no surprises, and a good night sleep, Amrath Grand Hotel Frans Hals turned out to be a good choice. Modern, comfortable rooms, great location (easy walk from train and into the main square), reasonably priced, and super helpful staff (over email and in person).

Agree, breakfast is overpriced. We just wanted some coffee, fruit and yogurt (which proved hard to find at 7 AM - finally found a grocery). Anyway, other than that, I recommend the hotel.

This hotel is in a great location in Haarlem. About a 10-15 minute walk from the train station and it has a very good parking lot. I think it's pretty difficult to find in a car but with GPS you should make it. My room was pretty small, however it seemed newly refurbished and everything was in good working order. Breakfast was pretty basic, but has everything you need. Everybody was pretty friendly. Only downside (for me at least) there is no fitness center. There are some gyms in the area that you can walk to, but I was told it was 18 Euros to go there. I like hitting up the gym, but that's outside my price range. Overall a very nice hotel

Stayed here for one night on business and hotel has a lot going for it. Location, price, parking below etc. Check in was smooth, room was nice, breakfast great.. Only 1 minor niggle was we were in the bar after a meal out and when we asked for another drink we were told we were too late, it was 10-59 and the bar apparently closed at 11... Given we were already there it would not have taken much to ask us before closing early !!! Didn't spoil a good stay though

Centrally located in Haarlem, close to the church and square stuffed full with great bars and really great restaurants. Rooms are well appointed, and the minibar is a bonus! If arriving by taxi, ask the driver to drop you by the canal, its 50yds from the door but saves you 20 minutes of trying to negotiate Haarlem's bollard system end ending up in the red light district ;-)

The hotel itself is located very close to the Grote Markt, and the Bavo church. If may wake you up during the night, as the bells ring at least every hour... But it adds to the charm.

Rooms are good, not large but ok. Beds are comfortable. Bathroom is decent sized, however water pressure is not enormous (perhaps depending on the floor). I stayed several times in the hotel, and so far the viez has always been terrible. However avoiid the rooms facing the street, as it can be noisy with party go-ers.

Breakfast is decent. Enough choice.

Service is friendly enough.

There is a parking nearby (if you drive zith your own car).

There are several restaurants nearby, so the hotel doesnt have its own (except for breakfast).

Room Tip: Do not ask for a room facing the street

Hotel is very dark and gloomy and in the canal view room we had you had to climb on a chair to see out of the window.
I booked the hotel shuttle to the airport and it failed to show- we waited for 40mins getting more and more anxious. The concierge kept telling us it was on the way. Eventually she changed her story and said it had broken down but reassured us they were sending a taxi instead and that we would still be charged the shuttle price of 17 euros each.
When the taxi eventually showed up we set off to the airport only to be told that the driver knew nothing of the shuttle and we would be charged the full 70 euros!
Upon our return I e- mailed the Hotel suggesting they might like to refund he difference. They did not deign to reply.

Room Tip: Don't bother.

Stayed in this hotel as part of our return trip from Enschede with my son as we had been there to pick up his belongings after living in Holland for a year. We booked whilst we were enroute and the staff were very helpful as although we planned to visit Haarlem we had not booked a room. The sat nav took as straight to the underground car park which is directly under the hotel and is not included in the room charge but reasonable for an overnight stay. The hotel is very comfortable and close to the town centre, when we were there it was freedom day so there was a fair on in the town square and a free concert in the park. I would definately stay here again and therefore recommend it to, it is the top end of most budgets but its worth it.
