“One of the nicest churches in the North of the Netherlands”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

The church looks nice from inside and from outside. It is not as spectacular as the Roman catholic churches or cathedrals in the more southern countries of Europe, which is not surprising as during the reformation most decorations in Dutch churches were destroyed.

Still if you go to this church then there is still enough to see, I went in for free when I went, other times there is a small fee, but that is worth it. If you are in Haarlem then this chuch should not be missed.

“Beautiful and impressive Church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013 via mobile

Sint Bavo is like many Dutch churches- sober, beautiful and yet impressive. Different from countries like Italy, the churches in the Netherlands are not extravagant, when you don't know where to look at first. The churches here are simple and yet beautiful. Sint Bavo has an impressive organ and walking around the church feels like going back in time.
I hope you take the time to visit it when in the Netherlands.

“Impressive cathedral”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 1, 2013

St Bavo is an impressive cathedral with a very ancient and famous organ. I think Mozart or someone played it.

Some differences about St Bavo. It is mostly brick, because Holland has no local stone. All of the stained glass windows have been destroyed, because of the iconoclasm of the Protestant Reformation. That was the only downside of the Reformation, in that a lot of artwork was destroyed.

“Beautiful cathedral”

Maybe not the most famous cathedral of the world, but still an awesome visit. Lots of cool history as you walk around with your map and explanations. Entry fee is very low.

“Just Lovely!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2013

If you have been to Europe you will know that beautiful historic churches are not in short supply however I found The Cathedral of Sint Bavo (or The Grote Kerk or St.-Bavokerk) was just lovely, amazing and different! Go on a market day and it's just wonderful before and after entering the church!

First of all there is a small fee to enjoy the church and I found it worthwhile. I think it's often best to just enjoy on your own but a few things to look for are as follows:

1. The organ. Well you can't miss it but if you are as lucky as I there will be someone playing it. Mozart and Handel have both played on this organ and I found that intoxicating. It sounds and looks just beautiful.

2. Medieval ships. Honestly I don't recall the history but these ships are strung from the ceiling and are models of ships. Thinking about how old they are and what they represent for such a shipping culture if amazing.

3. Graves. You are walking on a bunch of old graves. Pretty odd but cool at the same time. Hundreds of years old.

4. Old map painting of Haarlem.

5. The bronze sculpture of a pelican. This is what the artist thought they look like, pretty cool because it isn't what they look like. ;)
