“Lackluster”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

This centrally located Haarlem hotel barely earns its three stars. The lobby is fun with its collection of clocks, and the dining room interesting with its, what, Greek-themed? frescoes. The place is clean but asterile. No European charm whatever. The staff is young and green but they do their best. The breakfast is cooked with only minimal concern for quality. If you stay in a courtyard room you can be sure to hear the echo of every voice and every suitcase rolled through. While the place is well-intended, I would not stay again, especially when many other more charming facilities (including VRBO rentals) are available around the same price.

I am only submitting this review to Triadvisor after sending the same one to the hotel management, which elicited a dismissive and unconcerned response. We stayed in the 'Joops' part of the hotel.

The ‘bathroom’ (room with a shower) is barely functional. There is no shower facility - just a shower-head in the ceiling and a hole in the ground as a drain. In fact, there was even  a scraper in the room, placed there by the hotel management, to direct the water into the hole in the ground (drain) so that the apartment did not flood. Not acceptable. There was no sense of comfort - no shelves, no holder for toiletries, no heating, not even a towel rail.

Four apartments are in a separate building with no reception. There are a large number of steep, inaccessible stairs. OUR apartment had these stairs although when we asked at reception, we were told that there was a lift. The lift only went to the first floor, meaning that we had to descend and climb three additional flights of stairs, and walk along an outside corridor, every time we went out.

There is no double glazing in the apartment, so the noise from the bars in the street below, though apparently “normal” for a weekend, was unacceptable, even though we were on the fifth floor. The apartment is also very cold; the kitchen door leaks and the water which enters the room makes the floor very slippy.

We had assumed that the accommodation that we booked, under the aegis of the ‘Ambassador Hotel’ name, would be of the same standard as the hotel. It was not. In fact, it was very poor quality, and disappointing, as mentioned in our feedback. The decor is extremely dated and tired. I do not recommend this hotel to anyone, particularly since the management are unprepared to accept that the problems exist, and in their feedback in response to my complaints suggest the standard is "normal" for a hotel of this type.

Room Tip: My advice to other travellers is to find somewhere else to stay!

Stayed here for four nights in June, 2013. Great location in central Haarlem. We were a bit put off by the Egyptian motif in our room, but it grew on us in a weird sort of way. Ample breakfast in the morning and the front desk was helpful and polite. We'll definitely stay here again on our next trip to Haarlem.

We stayed at the Ambassador City Centre Hotel in June 2013. We stayed in Haarlem instead of Amsterdam because we prefer a small town atmosphere. We were not disappointed. Haarlem is a fine city with familiar Dutch architecture and lovely canals. The hotel was located on the Grote Market Square with the huge, Gothic St Bavo Church as it's centerpiece.
The hotel was very appealing. Our room was large, clean, and comfortable. It overlooked a pleasant side street lined with charming cafe's. The staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. They were more than willing to give us information and advice. The breakfast room was beautifully decorated and the food that was served was ample and delicious. The breakfast was an extra charge, but well worth the price. We enjoyed meat, cheese, boiled eggs, pastries, breads, cereal and milk, fresh and canned fruit, coffee, and tea. It was interesting and encouraging to us that the hotel was the take-off point for Rick Steve's The Best of Europe Tour. We always read his travel guides and follow his direction, so the fact that he used the Ambassador City Centre Hotel was a very positive endorsement.
We also appreciated the fact that the train station was only a short walk away from the hotel.

It is described as being just round the corner when it is just over five minutes walk away. Round the corner and a good bit down the street. All services are at the Ambassador City Hotel.
The rooms are a good size with on suite facilities. In a lot of respects it is quite basic. It is however in the centre of the town and only a short train or bus ride from Amsterdam. The breakfast is a buffet served at the main hotel, but it might be worth considering the wide choice of food establishment in the surrounding area.

We stayed in the hotel in late June. It is a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. Also a short walk from a little grocery store and lots of restaurants. We had two rooms that faced onto a little courtyard with tables. The rooms were clean and had more modern furnishings and were quite spacious for a European room. It had a nice big shower with plenty of hot water. The beds were comfortable. This hotel is right across from the Great Church which is very interesting to visit if you have a chance. However, the church bells can be quite loud so if you are trying to sleep during the day they might disturb you. We didn't hear the bells ring at night. Friends had rooms facing the street and said noise from the street was overwhelming. Overall we had a very nice stay and would return again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street as rooms overlooking the street are quite loud.

Although we were booked into this hotel, we were actually checked into an annex to the hotel round the back of the main hotel. Our room was massive and the best power shower I have ever had. On the downside the street outside was very noisy into the early hours of the morning.
An ok breakfast in a themed restaurant was good to get us going. The reception staff were very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room not facing the street
