“OK I guess”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2010

Location, location, location - right on the square, and at a fair price. First impression is of a tired old hotel. Up a long flight of stairs to the reception area. The hallways look like a 1920s cruise ship. Our room was, well, cozy and not very attractive. But on closer examination it was better. Larger TV than we had had elsewhere; good hair dryer and sink; and so on. We slept well, and breakfast was fine. Desk clerk was grumpy and unhelpful. For the price, it was satisfactory, but if I were going back to Haarlem I'd check out other options.

We liked our stay at the Hotel Amadeus in Haarlem, but our room was on the front side of the hotel and therefore, the noise level on the square was difficult to deal with and certainly made falling asleep difficult. The breakfast was delicious and our room was spacious. And Haarlem is a wonderful city to visit!

Firm recommendations for this quaint, comfortable hotel in the lowkey but bustling town of Haarlem. The staff were friendly, considerate, and attentive to all details of my stay. The breakfast was a masterpiece of quality ingredients and choice selections, with a generously made coffee in addition!

Room service was prompt an detailed, and the flat screen tv gave me my BBCWorld fix each night.

And the price. Extremely good value. I've paid twice as much only to get what amounted to a hostel room with its own toilet.

Don't be put off staying in Haarlem. Amsterdam (and other gorgeous cities) are within easy reach. Hotel Amadeus provides a far more comfortable experience than you're likely to find in the almost unbearable congestion of Holland's capital.

It is known for its small hotel rooms in Holland, therefore we cannot fault them.

The room we had was on the 3rd floor facing the Grote Markt (we wanted that room, so again, couldn't fault them). Good view, but very noisy at night. Didn't get much sleep all 3 nights. People talking, laughing until late at night right at the square...

Great location, next to the beautiful St. Bavo (Grote Kerk)... Nice and soothing melody sounded from the bells of the Church...

Breakfast was great!

This hotel is at a terrific place in Haarlem, directly at the market square.
Haarlem is great for shopping and you can catch the train and in no time you are at the seaside (zandvoort) or in Amsterdam.

Good rooms and elegant breakfast room with view over the market square.

First the good news. The breakfast room is wonderful, with big windows overlooking Market Square ("Grote Markt"). The staff is generally friendly and accommodating. Breakfast consisted of coffee or tea, cereal, orange juice, breads, lunch meats and cheeses.

The bad news is that room D2 failed the most basic requirements of a clean and comfortable room. The mattresses have outlived their useful life, being broken-down soft. We joked that it was like sleeping in a bowl or banana-split dish. The one comfortable chair in the room was soiled. Lighting is bad, and the windows don't help, because they just face a brick wall with no direct sunlight available. (Although, in fairness, we asked for the quieter of the two rooms available, and it WAS protected from outside noise.) Also, we stayed 4 nights, and they never changed the sheets. Because of the poor condition of this room, we cannot recommend the hotel. Perhaps there's a better room, but we didn't experience that.

We never expect much from bathrooms in old European buildings. This room did have its own shower, but the bathroom was dank, mildewy and moldy. The room actually had the odor of a sewer the entire time we were there. The poor little exhaust fan could not keep up with the moisture and smell.

We really enjoyed Haarlem. It is picturesque, not touristy, and offers fantastic shopping and friendly people. We'd encourage anyone to visit the city, but avoid room D2 at Hotel Amadeus.

Despite brightly painted small rooms, the hotel seemed old and rundown for the price I paid. Probaby there are better choices, especially in the off-season. Breakfast room is nice. Front-desk person rather creepily kept asking me to pay for my whole stay in advance. Desk and chair in the room is outdoor plastic lawn vintage, but this was the first european hotel room I stayed in that didn't smell like an ashtray.
