“Very enjoyable stay in a traditional Dutch accommadation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2013

We stayed at this lovely hotel for 4 nights in September. Very clean rooms with comfortable beds and helpful staff. We loved the location, being a 10-15 minute walk to the bus & train station as well as close to many nice places to eat within the Groet Market and shopping. Haarlem is a wonderful place to stay with easy access to Amsterdam, Utrecht, the airport, the sea and more, all 15-20 minutes by train. Haarlem itself is a quaint city worth spending some time in with canals, museums, a windmill, & shopping. Excellent breakfast consisting of a delicious cappuccino, meat & cheese, yogurt, spiced cakes/crackers, hard boiled eggs, cereal, fruit..... Don't miss the open air market on certain days; flowers, cheese, traditional dutch foods.... Yes, the stairs are steeeeeeep, so beware. We found it a fun experience to live a bit like the dutch in a canal house atmosphere. No air cond. and rooms dated but very clean!! I would stay here again in a heartbeat. Absolutely loved it!!!

We stayed at this property on the last night of our trip before flying home. We had trouble finding affordable lodging in Amsterdam and Haarlem for under 300 Euro a night and with no 2 night minimum for this particular Saturday night, so we took this recommendation from our Rick Steves book. Here were my chief complaints:

-Walls are paper thin. You feel like the guests in the adjacent rooms are right next to you in bed.
-Rooms are TINY.
-Rooms are old and run down.
-I feel like they should charge lower prices more comparable to a hostel given the conditions.

Note that stairs are steep and narrow. Not a problem for me, but might be for someone. Wifi is free, but slow. If you get a room facing the square, you will likely not be able to sleep.

In an effort to not be 100% negative, here are a few nice things:
-Breakfast is included in the room rate.
-The location makes it easy to get to all of the attractions in Haarlem on foot or by bike.
-It is pretty close to one of the bus stops that takes you to the airport. Also, only about a 10 minute walk to the train station.
-Check in staff are friendly and will store your luggage until check in.

Haarlem is a gem, but I would not stay here again if I went back to Haarlem.

Room Tip: Walls are thin, but if you get a room that does not face the square, you will have a better chance o...

Reading some comments and seeing pictures it looked such a pretty hotel, well located and reasonable price. Oh my god! I tried two different rooms. First one so small, no light, smelling smoke and kitchen so strong......bed was like for a kid !... Second one was smelling the same, 20 euros more for a bigger bed but even more dirty, with cigarets on the ground, no light close to the bed just on the ceiling, tv as small as my Ipad, no decoration, looked like old and dirty .....you just want to run.....what I did. Now staying in front in the Amadeus hotel, 10 euros more but much much better....At least clean and nice smelling!

Room Tip: Dont recomend it! Try for little higher price the Amadeus

I wanted a hotel that would be cheap but of reasonable quality for a 24h layover in Amsterdam. I chose the Carillon hotel in Haarlem - it is ok for the price but there are a few drawbacks... I got there early in the morning (9.30) and I could not check in before 1pm. Amsterdam is only 15 mins by train but the hotel is already 15 mins from the train station so it takes some time to go back and forth. The stairs are not wide at all and very steep. However the room and bathroom were clean and quiet. Breakfast is included and very good (continental). WiFi is also included and quite fast, and staff are friendly. It is a very good hotel if you don't have too much luggage.

The hotel was recommended by two travel books and I don't know why. I would never stay here again. The outside looks nice but the inside is totally disgusting. The bed was tiny and very uncomfortable. There was a lot of noise from outside so I didn't get much sleep. The rooms need a total revamping. This was not a good value for your money. The young Dutch girl at the front desk was very kind and tried to be helpful.

Room Tip: There is no parking near the hotel. It is in a pedestrian zone area. The parking garage is blocks awa...

Great location, good service, breakfast OK but nothing special. The rooms are small and the furnishings old and tired (table was actually broken top fell onto the floor with my laptop on it. I wouldn't stay here again.

I was travelling alone for a few days. And this hotel was perfect for me: pleasant stuff, good meal and really clean. I needed a good place to stay and easy to travel around. My choise was correct: few minutes to the train station and only 20 min to Amsterdam! Perfect!
Thanks a lot!

Room Tip: A little bit hard to get on the 3d floor every time, but anyway good for my training.

We're 5 minutes walk to the train that takes you to Amsterdam centre in just 15 minutes.(2) Low rates: We offer very low rates for a Haarlem hotel. Our customers come to spend their time out and about enjoying what Haarlem and Amsterdam have to offer. So we are small, clean and provide the best services we can at the very best prices.(3) Great restaurant:Nestled at the ground floor is Restaurant Carillon that is a warm cosy hangout from morning to dusk. We have regular locals from the area that love the food here and even if you don't stay we'd love you to visit for a coffee, beer or evening meal. ... more   less
