“Very very Bad !!!!”

Reading some comments and seeing pictures it looked such a pretty hotel, well located and reasonable price. Oh my god! I tried two different rooms. First one so small, no light, smelling smoke and kitchen so strong......bed was like for a kid !... Second one was smelling the same, 20 euros more for a bigger bed but even more dirty, with cigarets on the ground, no light close to the bed just on the ceiling, tv as small as my Ipad, no decoration, looked like old and dirty .....you just want to run.....what I did. Now staying in front in the Amadeus hotel, 10 euros more but much much better....At least clean and nice smelling!

Room Tip: Dont recomend it! Try for little higher price the Amadeus

I wanted a hotel that would be cheap but of reasonable quality for a 24h layover in Amsterdam. I chose the Carillon hotel in Haarlem - it is ok for the price but there are a few drawbacks... I got there early in the morning (9.30) and I could not check in before 1pm. Amsterdam is only 15 mins by train but the hotel is already 15 mins from the train station so it takes some time to go back and forth. The stairs are not wide at all and very steep. However the room and bathroom were clean and quiet. Breakfast is included and very good (continental). WiFi is also included and quite fast, and staff are friendly. It is a very good hotel if you don't have too much luggage.

The hotel was recommended by two travel books and I don't know why. I would never stay here again. The outside looks nice but the inside is totally disgusting. The bed was tiny and very uncomfortable. There was a lot of noise from outside so I didn't get much sleep. The rooms need a total revamping. This was not a good value for your money. The young Dutch girl at the front desk was very kind and tried to be helpful.

Great location, good service, breakfast OK but nothing special. The rooms are small and the furnishings old and tired (table was actually broken top fell onto the floor with my laptop on it. I wouldn't stay here again.

I was travelling alone for a few days. And this hotel was perfect for me: pleasant stuff, good meal and really clean. I needed a good place to stay and easy to travel around. My choise was correct: few minutes to the train station and only 20 min to Amsterdam! Perfect!
Thanks a lot!

Room Tip: A little bit hard to get on the 3d floor every time,but anyway good for my training.

I believe we got one of the dingy backrooms mentioned by the previous reviewer. It was clean, but in serious need of an update as the wallpaper was torn in places, and in the en suite bathroom, painted tile was slowly returning to its original color. The stairs were very narrow, steep and there is no other way up, so be prepared to heft your luggage yourself.
That being said, the members of the staff were courteous, helpful and resolved the few issues we had immediately. The hotel is on a busy square and the quiet back room was a bonus to weary travelers. We only returned to the room to sleep so basic was all we were looking for. Breakfast was continental in style toast, cereal, boiled eggs etc, with endless cups of coffee. On our last day in Haarlem, they kindly allowed us to leave our luggage in the storage room after check out, giving us time to visit the Saturday Market in the square before we caught the bus to our next destination.

Thanks for your honest review and rating.

We hope to update the rooms at the back soon. However, good to hear that back rooms also have a positive side in the reduced noise from the square.

Our stairs are a little steep as you note. This is typical of traditional Dutch property and we have looked at all possibilities to install a lift but this has not been possible. On the positive side our repeat customers come back because they say our traditional property has a lot of dutch character.

For others visiting these reviews - if you cannot manage then please do not hesitate to ask our staff to help you with luggage up the stairs. We don't mind if you are direct with us in Holland :-)

The four stars are really for the food and atmosphere. Good value menu and chef dishes in what we found to be quite an expensive town. Very comfortable and cosy casual bar and dining room with chandeliers and well-judged not too loud music. Front outside terrace with heaters and great view direct onto main market square -- the ideal place to sink a couple of good beers and watch the world go by. Your money gets you a great location, an ok breakfast, and you can even park for free in a residential area behind the railway station which is 12 -15 minutes walk away. Comfortable bed, but otherwise basic rooms. Spoiled by a very unwelcoming welcome from a barman who kept dissappearing to make up drinks orders rather than check us in properly. His colleague was no better. Asked to show us up to our room, he failed to even offer to carry my wife's case up the steep typical Dutch stairs. The first room we were shown was a tiny dingy back room which we refused as it was not the one we discussed on the phone when booking. We were then told "all the others are taken" which turned out to be quite untrue. We agreed on the nicer front room -- all fine except the handbasin had no plug. At first we were told "there isnt one" which was patently ridiculous because one was soon found when I insisted. The almost laughable lack of service or staff training on the hotel side is a pity because this place has a great vibe downstairs and we'd go back for that. They want money upfront for the room, so just make sure you ask to see your room before handing over your credit card -- and don't take any nonsense!
