“Fantastic location and nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2014

Stayed four nights and choose the hotel on the internet due to the location. We had arrived in Amsterdam by ship and took the train to Haarlem. The hotel is across the square from the train station which was extremely convenient. But it is not noisy or remote from the town centre. It was a ten minute walk down a main street to the central market, with shops and restaurants all along the route. Easy access to shopping and to a wide variety of restaurants on foot. The breakfast was good with a variety of choices. Room was clean and able to open up the windows. We travelled with 3 couples and the only issue that arose was that one of the 3 was charged a different rate even though we all booked online at the same time. The hotel would not honour the reduced rate and told our travel companions that they had to take it up with the main office for The Golden Tulip, not with Lion D'Or. That was definately poor service and left a bad taste. I highly doubt that any McDonald's franchise would tell you to contact head office if your hamburger was not cooked properly. So look at your online registration information carefully before you go to avoid any problems. Would have given a higher rating if not for this problem.

Room Tip: If you want a larger room that is more like North American size, choose the higher priced superior r...

The Golden Tulip Lion O'Dor Hotel in Haarlem, The Netherlands, was a nice hotel next to the train station. The breakfast was okay, and the room was a bit small. The hotel was in a nice location. The staff was friendly and the lobby had a nice atmosphere. There is no pool in this hotel, and the breakfast came included with our room. The hotel was very clean and our room had a nice view.

Stayed here for a couple of nights on a last minut booking to visit Haarlem. The location is ideal right next to the train station and bus terminus. Ideal for arriving into Holland from Schipol airport the bus drops you off just metres from the hotel. Walking into the centre of historic Haarlem again takes only a few minutes. We stayed B+B in one of the superior double rooms and were greeted on arrival by excellent service in fluent English. Our room was very pleasant and large and exceptionally clean. The bathroom was spotless. My only slight criticism was the memory foam mattresses on the split king size bed. I struggled to sleep on the memory foam the first night with some better sleep the next, preferring the more classic firm hotel mattresses. A few pictures on the walls would have been nice.
There was unfortunatley no restaurant or bar or room service when we arrived on the Sunday evening but we had some sandwiches with us so it wasn't a problem to us.
Breakfast was a typical buffet help yourself in a light and roomy restaurant. The fresh fruit and yoghurts were very good, but the rest was just average with poor attempts at the sweet offerings,
The staff are friendly and polite and happilty let us leave our luggage for the day until we made our way back to the airport.
Well worth using if convenience and cleanliness are your main needs for a hotel room

This hotel is across from Haarlem's train station but has NONE of the seediness that's usually associated with areas around train stations. The day and night staff are cheerful and very accommodating, and speak excellent English. The breakfast buffet is vast with numerous options though the automated coffee machine was not very good. Still, it will keep you quite full well past lunch. It's a standard business hotel, so don't expect Haarlem quaint, but it was very comfortable. I felt quite safe here as a solo woman traveler. The area is quiet, and there is a computer with printer on the 2nd floor for last minute printouts. The room has a safe for your laptop There are a number of take-outs near the hotel, a supermarket with late hours 3 blocks away, and it's a pretty and quick walk to the center of town. The train to Amsterdam is across the street, and in the same square, there is a public bus that takes you to the main airport too for super cheap (not convenient if you have a lot of luggage because it is a public bus and does get packed). Haarlem is an early town but Thursday night is the late shopping night. And stop at an ATM before shopping, the everyday stores (convenience stores, small carry-outs) are not into credit cards (there are many bank ATMs around the town center). All in all, it was a lovely stay and I would happily return with my family.

Room Tip: My room faced a side street, perhaps an upper floor would give a prettier view?

I wanted to add to my last review but apparently it's not permitted. Now I've stayed at the hotel again, I can. I wanted to say that, following the problems of my last stay, the hotel's customer service couldn't have been better. They wanted to put things right and, with my recent return to the hotel, they did.

My room this time was on the first floor and overlooked a side-street so was quiet. It was a decent size and the bathroom had a bath as well as shower which was excellent. The bed was very comfortable so I got some very good nights' sleep. The room smelled fresh as if it had been recently decorated and the room furniture replaced.

The wifi was OK. Though it still only connected to my netbook intermittently, my phone had no problem.

The position is, obviously, still the same. As close to the station as a hotel can be without being on a platform and the station area in Haarlem is fine, not like in larger cities. Still only a short (10 minute?) walk to the central square but with good small restaurants and cafes close by if it's raining. I didn't actually try the hotel's bistro as I was eating out with friends but the smells were good. Breakfast was the same as before - a choice of hot and cold with plenty of seating in a pleasant room overlooking the square.

The staff were helpful and pleasant and I enjoyed my stay there. I'm glad I tried again.

Our family stayed here last week, and the hotel had reasonable accommodations.

Pros:
- Great location near the rail station, Corrie ten Boom house, and the city square in Haarlem (it's basically a 20 minute trip to get to Amsterdam via rail)
- Great breakfast
- The staff was helpful and friendly
- WiFi works pretty well overall
- Water in the bathroom can get as hot as you could ever want it.

Cons:
- Small rooms and tiny bathrooms
- Queen mattresses have divide down the middle, separating them into basically two twin mattresses
- No pool, fitness center, hot tub, et al.
