“I love Hals, but this place isn't very comprehensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2013

But don't let that keep you away -- the trove of Dutch treasure is a great reason to visit, with a few Brueghels and other Dutch masters, the collection is fairly deep. My only complaint is that there are only about 12 Frans Hals painting here, so I guess his best work is larded in other museums, like the Rijksmuseum and the Louvre.

“A delightful visit in a pretty town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2013

If you're taking a leisurely trip to Amsterdam then I recommend half a day in the town of Haarlem. It's 15 minutes by train from Amsterdam and they run every few minutes. The area round the station is typically grotty but walk a kilometre and you're in the historic centre with its huge market square and massive church. It's a very quiet town (I suspect it's inhabited largely by commuters) with lots of ancient buildings and its own network of canals.

A few minutes from the market square is the Frans Hals museum, installed in some old almshouses set up for the poor men of the town. I don't know where the poor women went but the men must have been very happy here.

Hals is best known in the UK as the painter of The Laughing Cavalier (not laughing and not a cavalier, but hey); here you see what a fine portraitist he was, along with his large canvases of militia, very like the famous 'Night Watch'.

“Enjoyable museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013 via mobile

This museum is a real gem. The building that houses the paintings is beautiful. The Hals paintings are spectacular along with the paintings of his contemporaries. The audio guide does a nice job of highlighting the important information.

“Gen of a building with a great art”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

A great selection of paintings by Hals, excellently displayed in this beautiful old almshouse, allows a relaxed and close view to be taken of a great artist's work. Well worth the detour.

“Worth Visiting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

I didn't know anything about Frans Hals, but his work is great and the museum did a good way to explain what it is about him that makes him great. Definitely worth visiting.
