Yes, they are steep up to the second floor entry. but Henk or Annemarie will carry that 50-pound suitcase for you, then offer you a comfy room, at a fair price, at a quiet location, with a comfy bed. All renovated in 2014.
We would go back!

Close to Old Town, good local restaurants nearby, easy to walk where you probably want to go, but a block from the bus line too.

We stayed in the Terrace room and it was just big enough, with a nice little balcony area.

We spent two nights at the Malts Hotel and found it very convenient to the center of the historic district. Just a short walk to the Corrie ten Boom house and the Grote Markt. It was a great place to stay to attend the Keukenhof. (Less than a ten minute walk to catch the bus.) The staff was very helpful in telling us all about the area. They also kept our luggage for several hours for us until we could check in, as we arrived early. Our room was small, but comfortable and clean. It was also very quiet. The bed was comfortable as well. The breakfast room was open all the time as a gathering place. We met several other guests there in the evening and received tips about the area. The owners offered to make us a "take away" breakfast since we would be leaving before it was served. The juice and sandwiches were appreciated. We would definitely stay at the Malts Hotel
again! Haarlem is a wonderful small town...not too touristy.

What a surprise behind a plain, ordinary door. A steep climb to a lovely B&B hotel that is beautifully decorated. We had two rooms, one with a gigantic terrace(#3) and one smaller room on the third floor (#15). There's a sunny breakfast room that is low lit all night for those wishing to have a drink (honesty bar) and a constant flow of Bach on the boom box. There's always a basket of free fruit. The air shaft is painted with a colorful and interesting mural - just one of the details covered by this lovely hotel. The shower is big but the bathroom is tiny with no place to put a makeup bag. Wonderful hosts, Anne Marie and Henk greet their guests every morning with fresh juice, coffee and solid breakfast choices. Located two blocks from the center square and cathedral. Will definitely stay here again if we visit Haarlem.

Room Tip: Room 3 includes a lovely, large terrace.

This boutique hotel is in the heart of Haarlem, a 20 minute train ride from Amsterdam (they run every 10 minutes). This is not a tourist dominated town. Rather, it is a convenient location to get to all tourist attractions plus you have a charming town to explore. All within easy walking distance. The innkeepers are very personable and helped us with information about local buses, train schedules and attractions. Explore Amsterdam or the countryside. And, then return to Malts and Haarlem to relax in an unhurried way. The best of both worlds.

Room Tip: get a street view if possible

Lovely hotel, great central location and fabulous hosts! If you're planning a trip to Holland - B&B Malts Hotel should be top of you're list. Welcome drink upon arrival, information on great places to visit, maps etc... Lovely light airy room, comfortable bed, good sized bathroom with walk in shower, free wifi and thoroughly clean throughout. Nice breakfast room with complimentary tea/coffee and fruit. Looking forward to our next visit!

Room Tip: We stayed in room 12 which is a good size, nice en-suite with walk in shower. Quiet room. Can be a...

B&B Hotel Malts is an oasis of hospitality in the city center of Haarlem. We can recommend it to all who aren’t afraid of high and steep steps in the building.

Henk and Annemarie, the owners of the hotel, were very friendly and helpful. When we arrived, Henk told us about Haarlem’s sights and restaurants and carried our luggages up to our room. In the next days, during the breakfast or after it, we had many interesting and informative discussions with our hosts.

Breakfast was served pleasantly to 10.30 am; Henk and Annemarie themselves served coffee, tea and fresh orange juice. Buffet included yoghurt and muesli, croissants, bread, cheese, cold cuts and fruits. On every table was a vase of beautiful easter-time flowers. The guests had the opportunity to make coffee or tea also outside the breakfast time.

Our standard double (10) was tranquil, and its bed very comfortable and long enough. The weather in Netherlands was at the beginning of April quite cold and windy, and we had at first difficulties to set the radiator. The bathroom was light and spacious but rather cold.
