“A jewel!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

Having visited Amsterdam before, my wife and I decided to give Haarlem and B&B Malts a try. We couldn't have been more pleased! B&B Malts is right in the middle of the historic area of sparkling, energetic Haarlem -- yet still on a quiet, pedestrian-only, side street. The owners, Henk and Annemarie, are energetic, engaging, and ever helpful. They bought the place about two years ago. I don't know what it was like before, but now it's wonderful! Our room was bright and clean with a minimalist style, and quite large. Breakfast was great, with many choices of bread, cheese, meats, special yogurt, cereal, fruit, and so on. Henk introduced me to the Dutch "standard childhood breakfast" of chocolate sprinkles atop a slice of bread. Thanks, Henk! The B&B has bikes to rent; my wife and I rode the 7 short kilometers to the seaside sand dunes along convenient bike paths. Wonderful experience!

B&B Malts is a very nice bad & breakfast hotel, if you want to stay comfortably near the old city center of Haarlem.
You have to know where to find the entrance of the hotel, but once you are there (10min walking distance form the railway station) you are guided upstairs by the friendly owner(s) and with a drink you are told about the hotel and all about Haarlem.
The hotel room was very comfortable: good bed, enough space and a nice bathroom.
Also breakfast offered lots of food to choose from and enjoy with a nice view from the breakfast room out in the street.
Romantic!

Room Tip: We had a room at the backside (room 11).

B&B Malts, an old monumental building, is ideally situated in Haarlem’s city center, a 10 minutes walk from the train station. At about 400 mtrs. from the B&B there is a bus stop where the bus from and to Schiphol Airport stops. The B&B has 12 rooms, different in size. You enter the B&B through a small door and you immediately have to climb 2 narrow staircases to reach the first floor where you will find the reception. As there is no elevator the B&B is not appropriate for families with very young children or those with a physical handicap. Staff is willing to take care of your luggage. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful.
We visited Malts for 3 nights in Februar 2013. We asked for a quiet room which implies that we got a very small one on the second floor. The room is very basic, but has two very good beds with excellent mattresses. It is not possible put them together. There is neither a fridge nor an air-conditioner (the latter is not allowed in such old buildings) . There are a small TV with a lot of channels (probably digital), a table and 2 chairs. There are also a closet and a small bathroom. The bathroom has a toilet, a washstand and a narrow shower cubicle. The shower cubicle has no non-skidpads on the floor neither a handrail at the wall, but the owner told me this will be fixed soon. The shower itself is excellent. Towels are changed every 2 days, sheets every 3 days. There are bath/shower gel and shampoo, no piece of soap. Room and bathroom are very clean. The heating in the room must also serve the bathroom, so leave the door open if necessary
The cold breakfastbuffet is very good with tasteful bread and excellent coffee. I have had more abundant breakfasts in the past, but I prefer this one because of its very good quality. Fresh meat and cheese products, fresh juice, yoghurt, fruit, etc.
Because of its excellent location, very good breakfast, very kind staff and the sleep quality the B&B is absolutely recommendable. A price of 69 euro a night including breakfast is acceptable.
Tip: visit De Overkant, a small, cosy restaurant in the Paarelaarsteeg with very good dishes at a reasonable price.

Dear mr Pet,
Thank you for taking the time (litterally) to write your review.
Since your stay 21 months ago a lot has changed at B&B Hotel Malts:
We, Annemarie and Henk, took over from the previous owners in Juli 2013 and since than Malts has undergone mayor renovations to the rooms, bathrooms and general areas.
All rooms (14 in total now) have new bathrooms (wet-cell style) and the floor tiles are anti-skid.
All rooms now have ventilation and a fan and floor heating in the bathroom.
The breakfast buffet has more options now but we kept the ingredients you loved; fresh fruit, OJ, fresh grind local coffee and the typical Dutch cheeses from the Beemster and Gouda area.
The roomprices have also changed a bit, depending on which type of room you book of course.
Some things are still the same: steep stairs and no elevator which in deed is less suitable for small kids and less mobile people. But we help with luggage whenever we can!
Other things also do not change like the location in the city center of a beautiful old Dutch town.
So next time you visit Haarlem please drop by for a cup of coffee and we're happy to show you the new Malts.
Henk and Annemarie

This hotel is on a pedestrian street and we had a car. Henk the manager was extremely helpful getting us situated.he even carried out luggage a block to the hotel and then to our room! We then left to take our car back to Shipol and took the long way back. Unfortunately, the proprietors had to wait for us to return, as they don't live on site.we kept them waiting at least an hour.so sorry about that! The Room was small but the service was huge! Thank you Malts!

Write down everything you would like when staying in a hotel and you are probably describing The Malts Hotel. From the moment you arrive and are welcomed by these warm friendly hosts to their friendly goodbye you will be very well looked after. Excellent advice given to make the most of this beautiful town. The breakfast room is also a pleasant communal area to relax with a coffee etc. We enjoyed a bottle of wine from local supermarket in the evening and sat near the window. They have wine etc available at very reasonable prices, just jot it down in honesty book. Room was 1st class, stylish, newly refurbished and all facilities you would expect. Ideally situated in centre close to nice restaurants, bars and museums. Some practical advice; bus from Schipol airport is the 300 and is found just outside terminal. Approx 5 euros. Journey is approx 25 mins. 2nd from last stop. Amsterdam from Haarlem (short walk to station from hotel) is 9euros and takes only 15 mins. Every 10 mins. Haarlem is an excellent alternative to expensive Amsterdam hotels and this hotel is justifiably the number 1 choice. Can't wait to return.

We discovered Hotel Maltz on a recent trip to Haarlem. It turned out to be the best hotel of all 12 of the hotels we stared in on our tour of 6 countries.
The owners, Hank and Anna Marie are superb hosts and by far the most helpful and friendly of all of the hotels we stayed in on this trip.. The place was so clean it looked new on the inside.
Everything was immaculate. It is in a good location to restaurants and activities.

It is a very short 3 minute walk to the main city plaza and about 6 minutes to the bus stop to catch the bus for the Amsterdam airport, and only a 12-13 minute walk to the train station and that was for us 70+ year olds. The bus service to the Amsterdam airport is direct and quick. It drops you off right in front of the main airport entrance and cost only 5 euros..

Breakfast was good and accompanied by a glass of fresh, just squeezed, orange juice when you walked into the breakfast room..

The rooms had an extra piece of glass in the inside of the windows (that would open if you wished) and blocked any street noise. It was a terrific place to stay.

I should say that the hotel is on the second and third floors of the building. If you have a problem with stairs this would not be your place to stay. It was really nice. I would recommend it highly to anyone. I would recommend 6 stars for this hotel.

Room Tip: Go ahead and spoil yourself. We had a very large room. Ours was as large as a good sized hotel s...

We spent the last night of our Netherlands trip in Haarlem at the Malts hotel. I wish we had at least one more day to fully enjoy the city and the hotel. Haarlem is a beautiful and historic city with good museums, restaurants, churches and majestic city square. The Malts combines modern rooms and facilities with the charm of small European "historic district" hotels. Henk and Anne Marie are wonderful hosts and do not seem to tire of giving area information and recommendations to their guests. Very nice breakfast, and coffee, tea etc is available at all times. Close to # 300 bus which provides good service to Schipol airport (thanks for the advice Henk). Not far from train station and short walk to all museums, church etc.

Stairways are steep as others have pointed out, but Henk is always there to take your suitcases up and down. Good cable TV and wifi. Well recommended.
