“Great accomodations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

We recently stayed here and discovered that hosts Hank & Anna Marie had just taken over the Malts the prior week! They both have hotel management experience and were delightful hosts who were happy to give us tips on our travels. The rooms were clean, spacious and large and have a private bath, but they plan to do a complete renovation in the winter of 2014 which will make them even nicer. Haarlem is a delight and we are so glad that we stayed here instead of Amsterdam, which we traveled to twice by train (approx. 20 minutes). The Malts is a short walk from the main square and the train station. We enjoyed a delicious large breakfast every day in a sunny, flower-filled dining area with fresh coffee or tea made to order. I would definitely recommend this hotel. I was traveling with my 2 teenage children and sister. The hotel is also very convenient to a bus which leaves every 6 minutes for the airport. So glad we didn't have to take the train back to Amsterdam to get to the airport! We took a day trip to Edam and it was definitely worth the trip! I recommend purchasing the 2.50 euro guide book and taking the self-guided stroll through this charming town.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back are quieter. However, the large rooms for 3 people are in the front and the stree...

The hotel was very good and near the historical section of Haarlem. Haarlem can be easily reached from Amsterdam and is a short bus ride from the Amsterdam Airport. This hotel was also very close to the Corrie Ten Boom historical site which provided a very rewarding experience. The only negative was the steep Dutch stairs to get to the checkin area of the hotel and our room (no elevator).

During our 4 days visit to Amsterdam, we stayed at Haarlem for two nights and 1 night at Amsterdam. If I shall visit Amsterdam again, I will stay at Haarlem as a home base.
- owners are very friendly. Andrea offered us hot tea when we're checking in. A very warm welcome.
- Excellent breakfast. Freshly squeezed orange juice and americano with choices of cheese, bread, ham and egg. Ham and cheese are high quality.
- short walking distance to town centre. A present walk from Haarlem train station to hotel.
- the stairs are a bit steep but we are fully awarded of this before choosing the hotel. Manageable
- only accept cash

Room Tip: ask for the room on the 1st floor if you don't want to carry the baggage for 2 flights of stairs...

A beautiful room, gracious hosts and lively (international) conversation at breakfast—this is what we found at this delightful small hotel. Hotel Maltz was a perfect home base in Haarlem, on a central street near the main square. True, the garbage collectors can be heard from street-facing rooms, but consider it an alarm clock that keeps the street looking nice and clean. We really enjoyed talking with our host and other guests in the bright breakfast room.

We stayed one night in the B&B Malts Hotel in May, 2013. The room was spacious, there was free wi-fi, we had a shower and toilet in the room, the bed was comfortable, and the breakfast featured good cheese and a selection of fruit, yoghurt, and cereals, and with very good coffee and fresh-squeezed orange juice. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. Like many Dutch accommodations, this one featured a steep and winding staircase that would be a challenge to guests with heavy luggage or physical limitations. There was no bike storage on-site, but the train station was not far away and offered secure bike storage for a fairly reasonable fee. The hotel is on a street in a pedestrian zone with limited automotive traffic.

Room Tip: The street side can be loud at night

Booked a room 3 weeks in advance. Their web reservation didn't look too convincing so we booked by phone and got a confirmation mail.
One day before our stay they cancel the reservation, saying they messed up their reservation system. Sorry!
The only compensation they offered was a free breakfast during our next stay (where all the rooms come with breakfast included). As if that is going to happen.
No offer to arrange other accommodation. Look at booking.com they said.

Room Tip: You better have a plan B for the coming weeks, since messing up the reservation system is going to h...

I stayed at Malts a couple of times now and I enjoyed it every single time. The location is perfect to explore the beautiful and cosy city centre of Haarlem or rent bikes and cycle to Bloemendaal. I stayed at different rooms and found them all spacious, light and quiet. The bath room (no bath, just shower and toilet) in the last room we stayed (2nd floor, first right) was a bit old and could use some renovation. Wasn`t really a problem though, cause everything was clean. Would definitely recommend this to other, also cause it`s good value for money (especially in NL).

Room Tip: There are rooms with balcony`s, nice in summer.
