We have just returned from a 2 week trip from Europe and regarding Amsterdam, some pointers for those interested.

Accommodation. Finding cheap accommodation was a tough cookie. Room sizes were small, serious steep stairs, noise etc were 90% of the complaints we read on the internet prior to booking. And then we found AmsterHome on Damrak. What a joy!
The rooms were large, believe me. They were modern, the staff very helpful and the stairs only a few. The noise is droned out because of doudle windows so once closed, you don't hear a thing. Fine the Sex Museum is around the corner but so what. You are only about 200m from the station and bus terminal. Welldone AmsterHome, it was great staying there.

What to do? Try the Scooter Experience. This was the highlight of our trip and worth every penny spent. The Scooter Experience is a must.

Pannekoekenhuis. What a disappointment, they were closed at 7pm on a Tuesday.

Oh please and just don't go eating at Focking Chicken Restaurant - what a rip-off as even KFC tastes much better at half the price. Sauces (which costs extra) are cr#p that they buy at supermarkets (off the shelf stuff) and not worth a penny.

Buying T-Shirts? The further you go down Damrak the cheaper they get and we ended up paying €10 per shirt as opposed to 20.

We have been to Amsterdam twice once with our son when he was 10 years old stayed near to the museums on that trip. Visited the Ann Frank House very moving experience. The Museums are great and some great makets. Had a great time. Next time we went to celebrate 25years aniversery just the two of us and stayed nearer to Dam Square. Had a fantastic time. Amsterdam has so much to offer and so friendly and layed back you feel so safe walking around at night. Seeing people riding around on their bikes is amazing.

Amsterdam. What can one say??? Well first off every site should warn you about good comfy walking shoes. It's a must. Never walked soo much. All good thou.

Anne frank house is a must, also the Zoo is jaw dropping. They've got everything. you could thing of. Oh and Abraxas coffe shop, you can't go wrong.

Shopping is great. Great shoes. No matter where you stay, the whole place is very easy to get around. Tram buses the lot. Ireland has a lot to do to catch up.

On the face of it,reasonably good value for money.
However a few lessons were learnt and if I go again i will do things a bit differently.
First of all ......Money !
Don't book meals in the 7 Seas buffet, at 31 EURO less 15%, not good value for money ,food was OK but nothing special, better option is to buy a meal in the snack bar ,basic but adequate ,pizza, fish and chips etc @ 12 to 15 euros.
If you smoke,DON'T buy cigs from the shop eg.200 regal are 47.50 euro but if you buy the at the bar they are 3.35 per packet,do the maths !
Cinema tickets are 7.50 per head ,very uncomfortable seats, If you must go ,pick a short film !!
The tour to Amsterdam is good value and you can get off half way round if you wish ,it leaves you 5 hours to wander on your own, ample for a wee place like Amsterdam, the main shopping street is very expensive but ther is a C&As [I know they've closed down here] on the road to the railway station which is very good value , eat there !!!
Dont forget to keep £24 for the car park when you get back !!!

If I go again [possibly] I would upgrade to commodore class with complimentary breakfast, cost 16 euro to upgrade but saves you 7.50 on a breakfast and buy meals in the snack bar at half the price of the resturaunt.
Beer is 3.75 euro for a pint of draught Grolsch, not bad I thought but after a few you risk life and limb climbing in and out of the top bunk ,another good reason to upgrade to Commodore class !

Finally if you like a smoke with your drink, there are smoking areas in the main bar and the night club.
In the Sky Bar it is half covered and you can smoke anywhere,it is very popular and opens as soon as you sail so stow your gear and get up there quickly if you want a seat, unfortunately it closes at about 2130.

Hope this helps someone, have tried to pass on a few things I wish I,d known before I went.

Enjoy

Alfie.
