“Historic building, attentive host, lovely breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2012 via mobile

We stayed for four nights, hired bikes down the street and took off...the B & B is warm and comfortable...we had the room on the top floor...lovely breakfasts and kindness from Lesley. The stairs are steep to the bedroom, but that is the tradition in Amsterdam! Lovely fabrics and artifacts sourced from the owner's travels

We received a warm welcome of Lesley who provided us a lot of good tips about the city of Amsterdam. We enjoyed the well decorated and comfortable room and last but not least, the excellent breakfast (with fresh orange juice, delicious honey and strawberry jam). The location of the house, in a very quiet street, is also very convenient. This is defintively a very good place to stay in Amsterdam

Wonderful place in almost the center of Amsterdam yet in a quiet and peaceful district. Walk a way distance to many attractions (that would suit all ages :-)) - both cultural & nature (Artis Zoo is at walking distance too). Many wonderful places around to eat and drink a glass of beer :-). And the MOST important - wonderful atmosphere of a house that is created by host, Lesley, who is very nice lady having great personality and generous heart - you will feel it when talk to her!

Very decent B&B, good price/quality ratio.
Try to book the basement room, it's spacious, cozy and beautifully decorated. It also has a separate entrance, so we felt like home.
It's a bit cold for a Russian inside, but there is always a heater at hand.
Lovely and rather hearty breakfast served in the owner's living room, so you
get the taste of a Dutch breakfast in an ancient century house.
Main attractions within walking distance.
The owner of the B&B is a charming lady, who has travelled a lot
and has a good knowledge of art.
Special note for the Russian travellers: you' ll find a birch tree right at the door,
so you won't be missing home too much!
Definitely our choice when we go next time.

Host Leslie provided excellent tips on how to get around Amsterdam during our 3 night stay. The Stop and Go bus on nearby Prinsengracht assisted us greatly in our travels to venues in Amsterdam. Superb breakfast each morning - even fresh bread from the market one morning.
We had the upper room which was very spacious and comfortable and enjoyed going up the narrow steep stairs. I had no problems with our suitcases, but if you have problems lifting them be careful.

Stayed at this charming B&B for 3 nights. The host, Leslie, (friendly & informative throughout our stay) informed us of a change of room upon our arrival however this wasn't a problem as the suite we were shown to was comfortable, well decorated and had tea/coffee making facilities. There are a good number of bars & restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance but yet out of earshot of Aemstelhuys itself. Combined with a very comfy bed a good nights sleep was enjoyed by all. Tram line number 4, which stops nearby, allows easy access back to the Dam Square, Centraal Station, etc.. It took us a while to adjust to the fact that we weren't in a hotel. For example, not having to lock the room door each day, taking care with the wooden floors, the narrow staircase. A 200-year-old townhouse has its ways after all. Leslie provided a wonderful fresh breakfast each morning which included freshly baked croissants, local cheeses & yoghurts plus other elements of a traditional Dutch brekkie. This, combined with Leslie's tales of her time in India, made for an interesting start to each day! Puddy (or Butch as I called him.....it's a long story!) the cat is adorable but fear not any cat-haters out there, for his owner keeps him in check. Safe to say our stay at Aemstelhuys made our trip to Amsterdam all the more memorable, for all the right reasons. Hope we get to return there some day.
