“Great location, stylish hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014 via mobile

We stayed in a large double. The room was not the biggest, but fine for a weekend. Would not book a standard room that is even smaller. The decor was nice. Specially liked the lobby with the fireplace. Good service at the front desk. Needed help to print a voucher, got fast service. Breakfast is included and plentyful.

So, where shall I begin. Yesterday was my birthday and me and my girlfriend planned to go to Amsterdam for a day or two. Hotel V (Frederiksplein) seemed like the perfect option. Both locationwise- and it sure looks beautiful when you scroll through the different photo's online. Luckily our high expactations were matched by a great stay!

When we arrived (late: 11PM) the night watchman was really helpfull and although we know our way in and around Amsterdam- he insisted to speak on some typical tourist hotspots. Most of which he disliked, because it was overrated he sayed. He made some jokes, we laughed about it.

When we entered our room (Loft V1) we were welcomed by a birthday note of the Hotel V crew (how lovely, thanks guys & girls!). The room was spacious and looked amazing. We absolutely love vintage material- so the living room chairs were a big plus and the old school globe bar was a great home accessory. It was not 'too much' of a vintage-orientated room though. It had a nice kitchen and practical closet. We enjoyed the living room fireplace before we went to sleep. There is some noise outside (public transport, tram), but it doesn't bother much (there are earplugs available in your room, if you disagree). Last but not least... The rain shower, perfect.

The breakfast was not too extensive, but it had pretty much every (basic) food you wish for in the morning.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay in Hotel V (Frederiksplein) and would recommend it to everyone that's interested. The location is also spot on- as it offers you great streets by walking distance (Utrechtsestraat, Albert Cuypstraat (market) and the Rijksmuseum at 1KM walking distance). We would definitely book again.

Location is absolutely amazing: trams, city center, shops, cafés etc are in a walking distance. Room is very small, but stylish. The bed and pillows are very comfortable. Good breakfast, very friendly stuff.

Last november I stayed in the cornerloft in Hotel V Frederiksplein. It was a an amazing experience since you can overlook the city from your bed. It felt like a home and I could instantly move in if I had have to. Had a really fun time in Amsterdam with my friend and this was definitely one of the factors that made the trip as good as it was.

Chose this for location and price. Rooms are smaller than expected and in an older Amsterdam building which means sloping floors, drafty windows and hearing every activity in the hallway. Noise from the trams, although expected, was a lot less than expected. Breakfast was good, simple but more than sufficient. Bathroom had a noisy ventilator that would not turn off and no evidence that the hotel staff looked into my complaint about it. All in all an average experience with a good location but I won't be coming back.

The rooms are indeed small but so is the relative price. Stayed in a XL room which had an excellent bed. Breakfast is included which is nice but parking is painful as only expensive parking garages are around. The hotel is 10 min from the museums and 15 min from the heart of amsterdam. Public transportation and also bikes easy to get to. Will stay again next time in Amsterdam.

Since our regular hotel in Amsterdam was not available we decided on one of the new brands in the city - the V hotel. I have known the neighbourhood as a kid so I was curious how things have changed - and after the first view of the hotel I was not overly impressed. The historic buildings have ben transformed in something I can only describe as a profit centre: take as much money as you can as soon as possible and no matter what the client (or victim) may feel about that – or what is does to a historic building in the city centre.

A hotel used to be a place where you can relax, where you can take of your shoes and clothes and feel at home or at least feel at ease. The V hotel has none of that. Here you must be one of those young warriors who are superbly dressed and feel at home in a hotel that is completely anonymous without any attention to the individual. Here we are all the same - no age, no taste, and no style.

We were sold a room at the third floor where the elevator only goes to the second floor. The elevator is only for non-claustrophobic people since it measures only 90 x 90 cm, about 10 square feet. We are certainly not overweight but there is no place for us and our Samsonite - so the poor thing had to be dragged up all those stairs without any help. Apparently good old concierge service does not exist anymore - because we are only here to take your money.
We had a look at the room and the overwhelming combination of black tapestry, black walls and no heating made us feel like peeking into an ancient abandoned castle so we refused the room. We informed the receptionist we had decided not to take the room and were informed we had no choice since there was a "no cancelation" policy. So we went to see another room (equally cold since heating is expensive) and decided to stay there otherwise we would have lost our two-night deposit. The room had just been finished we were told - which means there is no light on the table, no hooks in the bathroom for towels, no hand shower to wash the important parts, no place to sit comfortably etc. The bed is ok - but that is about all. After a relative good night sleep (you are awake at 6 am due to the trams and bad noise insulation) we went for a morning walk. We informed the desk we did not want anyone to enter the room for service so when we came back someone had entered the room, displaced all our affairs, put the heating up and up and sort of made the bed. Listening is difficult..

I believe you should put hotels like these very low on your list; they do not exist to make travellers’ life a bit more pleasant. No - they only exist to have a short lifetime and take as much as possible from you during that hopefully short period. The V hotel has a life expectancy less than a year...

Room Tip: Try to stay away from the room at the street (weteringschans) side: the trams start at 6 am and the...

Dear Sir,

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Hotel V Frederiksplein. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed in your stay, especially as we did our utmost when speaking to you at checkin to please you and your wife (we showed you 5 different rooms, and gave you a free upgrade in the end). We understand that we are not to everyone's taste as far as design is concerned (I remember that you disliked the black walls), but we do our best to provide as much service to our guests for a reasonable price (free wifi, free coffee and tea, etc).

And as for "young warriors who are superbly dressed"....well thank you for the compliment.

Kind Regards,
Jan Stuurman
