Before heading to Amsterdam I was disappointed to find that there isn't much in the way of Dutch cuisine and suspicious that all the food that was Indonesian! But on the flight the american lady sat next to me, who had lived there for 3 years, highly recommended trying one of the many Indonesian restaurants they have there, particularly to have the rijstafel. We tried booking the restaurant she recommended but it was full at such short notice so we went with the next choice.
The restaurant itself is rather small and the stairs to the toilets would be a health risk in the UK but added to the charm here. We did indeed order the rijstafel and a bottle of merlot. The food was good, not amazing but there was plenty of it. I don't eat meat but my husband does so we split it down the middle and both enjoyed our own dishes. I was stuffed by the end and am now on the look out for a place in London that does something similar.
This place is very popular and people were being turned away the whole time we were there so make sure you book before going.
