Description: Cafe de Jaren opened its doors in june 1990 as one of the largest cafes in Amsterdam, sporting an entire new and unique formula. The concept is mirrored in its spacious and light-rich architecture and interior decoration, as well as in its pleasant, non-pushing atmosphere. The large building features a spacious cafe on the ground floor with an international reading-table, a pleasant restaurant with large-choice salad bar on the first floor, as well as a superb canal-view terrace.Situated right in the centre of Amsterdam, Cafe de Jaren can be easily reached by public transport.

“Twice in one day!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2013

I was introduced to the Café de Jaren when I took guests to lunch near the University of Amsterdam library (just off the Rokin). One of my friends suggested it as a nearby lunch place. It is located at Nieuwe Doelenstraat 20 (not far from the Droog retail store). The cafe is quite large, at least 2 stories, light-filled and spacious. We all ordered the soup, which came with fresh-baked bread and water.

Later that day, I invited another colleague out to dinner, and he choose the same cafe. Again, it was in walking distance of where we were. He said the food was quiet excellent, and it was. The dinner menu was selective, maybe 6-8 entries available, with the salad bar buffet, a lovely addition. I ordered salmon, perfectly prepared.

From the street I noticed that the restaurant has a large outdoor deck. Even in the chilly March weather, there were diners on the deck. I think i will wait until a warmer visit to try it out!

Highly recommended.

“grand cafĂ© de jaren”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

This is THE place for meeting up with friends in Amsterdam. Everybody knows the Jaren. Mostly people come here for drinks, but there is lunch and dinner as well. The menu rarely changes and usually not for the better. The food is bland. It is a very charming place to be, but talking with your friends is difficult because of the terrible acoustics. Best in summer is to secure on the outdoors spaces (both down and up) that have a lovely view of the canal.

Nice bar right next door to the hotel NH Doelen however a limited menu if your looking for something to eat, can be very busy and quiet noisy in the evening,

“Great canal side location; light, bright and airy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2013 via mobile

Fantastic location including an outdoor terrace on the edge of the canal. The interior is light bright and airy, with modern styling. Large communal tables with angle poise lamps appeared popular with people working or surfing the Internet, overall the clientele was a good mix of locals and tourists soaking up the atmosphere. Enjoyed a tasty lunchtime snack; averagely priced at c6 euros for a baguette or soup. Well recommended for the cool atmosphere and great location; not the widest menu but fine for a lunch.

“Great place to work”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013

This is a really great cafe and a wonderful place to work, check up on the world, or just relax. The food is good, though not exceptional, but the salad bar is highly recommended.
